Oil consumption

I have a 2004 1.8 and I seem to be using a lot of oil on long journeys. Mileage is only 90,000. I normally use 5w30 and it has been suggested I put thicker oil in like 4w40. Any suggestions on what my problem is and would thicker oil help.

Hi,

oil viscosity will not stop or reduce oil consumption.
The engine has some wear on cylinder walls, this can’t be fixed.
Just keep an eye and top up regularly so you never run low on oil and you can continue drive  your car for a long time. 5w30 is fine.

I had a Toyota Corolla 1.6 Petrol after around 72000 mls the oil consumption increased dramatically to around 500 mls a litre up to 70000 mls it did'nt use a drop between services. When I complained to Toyota they were'nt interested. The car had been serviced by Toyota the whole of its life but this cut no ice with the dealer or Toyota.More recently I had a Toyota Avensis 2.0 D4D with the 2WW engine dealer serviced always. It is now using oil at around 1000 mls a litre I just think that somewhere down the line quality has started to slip with Toyota and of course other major brands.  All my Toyotas were dealer serviced so no excuse of wrong oil etc. The only thing you can do is to be very careful checking levels use the CORRECT OIL and top up regularly. On the motorway oil consumption will rise so try to keep your own top supply in car to avoid being charged over the top prices in service stations.

My first Avensis was T22 facelift, 1,6 vvti. It had a piston ring problem (the oil rings had lost tension). It was repaired under warranty (new piston rings; maybe just the oil rings, I don´t know. Mr T did not put any markings to the maintenance book).

It's true: it doesn't make sense to fix. Changing the piston rings may not help in this case. Perhaps a whole new engine? Well, that may not be reasonable either...

I agree.
