yeah, I guess they left the handbrake off, although how it did it considering there would not have been much of a slope I have no idea.

handbrake off, stuck it in Reverse thinking it was Park, ran an emissions test at idle, put it into the fast idle test and off it went

ah that makes sense.

Maybe a dumb question but something I've often wondered... and that is how is the fast idle test performed.

Is it automated with the test rig somehow able to have control over and alter the engine speed or does it needs someone to sit in the car and hold the revs up? Using the OBD port perhaps.

I've also wondered how they get the 'revs' figure that is put on the test certificate. Is that electronically read somehow or is it visually read off the rev counter. And of course not all cars have a rev counter.

It's all done via ODB2 - I think the commands for all that stuff are part of the minimum standard of commands and telemetry that all cars have to support.

The only thing I don't get with it is why didn't the car start reversing straight away when it was put in reverse; The Aygo doesn't have a hold function to my knowledge, and even if it was in a rut I would have thought it could easily overcome it...? :confused1:

Many thanks @Cyker I had often wondered how that was done.

MMT is an automated manual as soon as you raise the rpm it will start to engage the clutch - a MMT will not engage the clutch without rpm as not to stall the engine - think of it as putting a car in gear with the clutch depressed

A fast idle is circa 2500rpm

Considering I've had 4 MMT transmission cars (1 yaris and 3 aygos) I'm lucky its not happened to me. And it won't now that I've got a CVT with a proper P for park.

Very good explained here .
I fully agreed with flash22 and Cyker, it is obvious what have happened, simply mechanics error.
For the car , does it have these beeps like Prius or Auris hybrids to warn you have selected R instead of P? This would be helpful.
In this case the garage are fully responsible and should have cover the repair cost plus offer some sort of reimbursement, like free two year services and mot to compensate for the caused inconvenience.
If they refuse even the slightest to accept liability, then claim on insurance, fix or replace the car , take those to court , and leave appropriate review on Google maps at the end.
I know we all do mistakes, that’s fine , but not all of us are big enough to accept liability, apologies and learn from these mistakes. All that at expense of the car owners. Good at least that no harm been done to anyone. 👍
