Cannot hear voice calls on 3-button Android Auto

I know this problem has been posted before and is also quite common - but it's usually mentioned in threads about firmware updates etc. rather than in its own topic. When I first connect my phone, I can hear voice calls - but as soon as I am streaming or playing anything, I can no longer hear voice calls. The other person can always hear me. I've tested a couple of different USB leads, and I've also tried an AAWireless dongle to see if that fixes the issue - and no it doesn't. The firmware on my 3-button head unit is up to date. So, I'm out of ideas - has anyone successfully managed to work this one out? 🤔
