13,000 miles and I already need a new set of front tyres!

Anyone else have Bridgestone 215/40 R18 89Y and needing new tyres this quickly?!

I know I have a heavy foot, but is this normal?

Both rears are at 4.5 mm, FR at 3.0 mm, FL at 2.5 mm. Tyre wear appears fairly consistent across the width, so doesn't appear to be related to tracking issues (I have it checked often anyway).

My Gen.3 Yaris on 16" went ~30,000 miles between tyres.

I do not rotate them; I just run them until the fronts need changing, then swap rear->front and and put new tyres on the back.

Out of curiosity, we checked the YC, and its tyres are much healthier/more in line with expected wear.

It must be noted that I have done many, many more short trips since getting this car than my Gen.3 ever saw. I consider a "short trip" anything less than 25 miles round-trip, though much of it is 30 MPH.

A couple of months back we ran both cars on a 300 mile round-trip (mostly motorway) and both cars reported a very cool 101 (YC) and 96 (GR Sport) MPG. I'm pretty darn happy there isn't anything untoward with the car (dragging brakes or other anomalies).

Not great but not shockingly bad either. If all you do is motorway miles, then yes, that would be bad. For around town driving it's within the range of normal. Also, how many mm do you have left? Dealers will tell you to change at about 3 mm.

About 2.5 mm. I run down to about 2 mm.

Again, I'd agree with you, not great life from one set, but also not diabolic. You seem to be on top of the usual things like tracking and tyre pressure. Maybe try a different brand of tyres next.

Yeaaaa mine don't last long either, but I know why (Basically it's me launching it from a standstill whenever I'm first at traffic lights  ).

It would be worth getting your alignment checked though, as I've noticed mine seems to be much more prone to going wonky than my previous cars; I can only assume it's because the tie rods are new and not covered with guck, so they get tweaked more easily by the many potholes and speed cushions I drive over or something?? :confused1:

I took it last week to an allegedly main dealer (Pentagon/Vertu Toyota) and they were unable to do the alignment as their software didn't recognize the car! They apparently had a new system installed since my previous visit, and it was unable to do it. Outrageous!!

I'm not sure they serviced my car properly, either. I think they spilled oil in the engine bay as it smelled hot for a week afterwards!

I would take it to a tyre house but last time I did that they told me the model was too new and wouldn't be in the database yet (they checked their system anyway and confirmed). I'll give them a try (and order new tyres while there).

Huh? What have you been smoking (beyond tyres)? 😛

Are these all season tyres? They do wear a little quicker. I'd try something like Michelin PS5 (not cheap, but good).

Not sure. They aren't the best in the wet (not the worst by any means), but dry performance is outstanding.

I'm wondering if they are a softer compound for dry performance, hence the higher wear rate? I can live with that if it's the reason.

We've had similar experience with out local Toyota dealer. They had the car three times. Last time with their 'expert' mechanic. I could have done it better myself with a set of strings at home. We ended up taking the car to a specialist and it was fixed in an hour.

That's what I'm thinking. I don't know what the tread wear is on the Bridgestones, but it's possible. I also just realised that your Yaris has exactly the same tyres size as my GR86!! The 86 comes with Michelin PS4. So far, I've done 3000 miles and there is loads of tread (I'm guessing 4+mm) left. That might not sound particularly good, but considering the (ab)use they see, it IS really rather impressive.

Good grief you can't make this stuff up

Why does it even matter what the car is, all they need to do is make sure the steering is straight, bolt the laser targets onto the wheels and press some buttons!

Just theorizing - I'm open to any suggestions on why it seems to go out of alignment so easily compared to my previous cars!

This is the tyre currently on the car (OEM): https://www.bridgestone.co.uk/car-tyres/summer-tyres-turanza/t005

Those seem to have a very middle-rating (50-60) for wear on TyreReviews, below average for a premium-brand tyre (Usually 70-80), so it may well be a soft compound!

Tony's tyre of choice, the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2, is rated at 89 for wear so might be worth trying those and seeing how they compare!

I have those T005 on my rears, 195/60/15 size. Got them in 2018, so must have done 50k or more. Just had a quick look parked at work, and I'd say they have a good 4mm left.

Unfortunately they don't do the Efficient Grip in that size. And the Eagle F1 that they do do in that size has a lower wet grip rating. Continental Sport Contact would be a good choice in this size.

No, I don't know either. It seems odd. Other that things just settling in perhaps when new or not being tightened particularly well. I should also say that it is not unheard of that cars come from factory with less than perfect alignment.

The Gen.3 was needing alignment every 1000 miles or so, and so far the same story with the Gen.4. As much as I avoid holes in the road, it's inevitable, and as careful as I am with speed bumps, they are an issue, too (especially when they are steep-sided and go down the side of the wheels putting side loads on them).

Where I live has nasty partially-raised curb style speed bumps, and no matter how slow (or fast) you go over them, they bump the car rather hard. Think dropped-curb that you get in the pavement for driveways.

Jeez every 1000 miles? Okay mine's not quite that bad!

On my Mk1s it was mostly a set it and forget it thing; I'd only get it aligned when changing tyres and that was mainly just to check (And I stopped even doing that because the tyre place would always make it worse! The last straw was when one time they sent me out with the steering wheel at 30degrees clockwise for straight! I was like, are you serious? Can you really not see what's wrong with this?!

With the Mk4 I keep noticing some months after it's been tracked it doesn't quite want to track straight or is very slightly turning to one side when the wheel is straight and it's really baffling how quickly it goes out!

Oops, I just realized he has a GR Sport with the 18" rims  That's UHP and UUHP territory  - No cheap touring tyres for you!!

But TyreReviews will be good - Jon seems much more focused on UHP and UUHP lately than touring tyres for us mortals!

Possibly down to the make of tyre/softer compound giving more grip but wear out faster? i've found Continental, Bridgestone and Landsail have been eating alive! on the front of my cars and would ever buy them again, yet a set of Dunlop's i had on one car lasted around 30,000 miles.

1000 miles and wheel alignment is a bit too often.
13000 miles and down to 3mm or less , perhaps it’s about right at those large and low profile tyres , and the question is how deep were the tread when new? Some  Corolla owners on Falkens 235 18 got there at around 16-19k .
The tyre width matters and the driving pattern and styles. Motorway easy drives the tyres will last ages, spirited driving, town driving tyre will go fast. Wide tyres usually wear off faster too.
If me I will change all 4 tyres for something different to see if anything better. Or just buy two the same. These tyres are expensive.

It's ironic since they market them as having "10% longer wear life". Probably compared to the previous version of the same tyre, which much have been even worse. 🙂

In any case, several reviews mentioning they get between 6000 and 13000 miles out of a set.

I think they started with 6 mm of tread (for comparison, the 16" I had on my Gen.3 started with 7 mm).

Just on that alone, they will have a shorter life.

If 7 - 2 = 5 mm used gets say 25,000 miles, that's 25 / 5 or 5000 miles/mm.

If I'm getting 13000 out of 6 - 2 = 4 mm, that's 13 / 4 or 3250 miles/mm.

I'm getting around 50% less life out of these tyres, relatively. 😐

A tyre dealership owner once said to me that cars with low-profile tyres fitted seem to have more alignment issues. His view is that low-profile tyres have less sidewall to cushion pothole impacts, so more is transmitted to the suspension and steering components. He also reckoned - in his experience - that low-profile tyres are often fitted to those cars known to be driven by careless and lunatic drivers: obviously that wouldn't apply to Toyota drivers eh?

Sadly virtually all new cars come with low profile tyres, esp. the higher-end specs, and manufacturers seem to give little choice in the matter.

You'd think they'd want to encourage use of lower profile tyres to improve their mpg and CO2 figures, but instead spend untold amounts of R&D money to do that then undo all their efforts by fitting increasingly large rims!

Last 3 comments are true and totally correct.
On top of all been mentioned about low profile tyres I ca add that those does not help car stability, stopping, acceleration and handling in general.
All they give is look, good for some but not so good for others. Then harsh ride, bad for the passenger and bad for the car. Limited tyres choice, higher prices, risk of damage tyres and wheels easily. And finally, these tyres no matter how careful you are they will wear off faster than more appropriate tyre sizes. My car on 215/45 17 barely could last over 30000 miles, switched to 205/55 16 on the same brand tyres and now I am getting 50k+ or even more , 60k  and above if no snow during winter.
