Hello guys and nice to meet you all.

I am at my wits end. I've had an annoying whining noise on my beloved Aygo for months now. Regardless of what my garage said ''You'll hear every noise with your windows down...'' - well, I don't have A/C and I've always had my windows down and this noise has NOT always been there. It's a whining sound that is audible in 3rd gear and no other gear. When warmed up and driven around for a while, it's not that audible and seems like it's gone, regardless, my local garage said they couldn't hear anything when they went out in it. I've just had a clutch fitted recently by them but I cannot remember if I heard it before! I just had the water-pump changed and if it was the alternator, it would make the noise regardless of what gear I'm in. Also, the wheel bearings feel fine, I've just had an M.O.T pass with no wheel bearing advisories, only slightly worn engine mounts. I've also been down a smooth, new road in different gears and with the engine off and no noise. As soon as I told my local Toyota dealership I'd been elsewhere, they just jumped into sales mode and wanted to fit another new clutch and a new flywheel without even looking at it?! I've attached a video of the sound, more prevalent after I've been around the roundabout. Headphones would be better!

If it was gear specific (only 3 and you don't hear it on 4 or 5th), then more than likely the gearbox.

What gearbox oil did the garage used?  I know there are shoddy places that reuse gearbox oil to save cost...

The correct oil for Toyota Aygo is Toyota LV 75w sold at £18-20 per litre on eBay or Dealer.  Gearbox oil capacity 1.7 Litres.  Toyota manuals says gearbox oil should be filled at levelled surface (personally, I jack the front slightly to fill in extra 50-100ml because factory usually over fill them by slight amount).  You might want to change the oil and see if the noise goes away.  If that doesn't work, I would just live with it.

I'll give Toyota a call and get them do it, at least if there's anything wrong I've got leverage to say I want it sorting before I pay more. Maybe the garage I took it to use cheapo stuff?

It might be normal and you haven’t hear it before.
If it’s from transmission bearings after new oil change this noise might become even more pronounced.
One thing to try is to note the rpm when whining is happening and try to replicate the noise in neutral by rising the rpm to the same if the noise comes up it might be from something else like water pump, alternator or pulley. Although it sounds to me like a gears. If you change the oil only use original Toyota and make sure it’s exact spec as per the book and don’t overfill. 👍

Thanks everyone - as I've spent £1600 on it this year already, after 7 years I've decided to move it on. I have loved this car so much but change is needed so I've just bought a 2017 Yaris Icon.

yeah its a 2014 mk1, no cars are really meant to last beyond 7 years anyway without having to start doing more work on them to keep them going.
