First posting - RAV 4 Headroom Question

Good Evening All

Looking at purchasing a RAV 4 or Lexus NX. Did sit in a new RAV 4 yesterday (plug in hybrid). Was not a sun or pan roof model and did find the headroom disappointing. Ok, so I'm 6'4 and long in the back. The seat was set as low as possible too. The strange thing is I remember sitting in one about 2 years ago and seem to recall there being greater headroom. Is there any difference between the models? Maybe plug in Hybrid has less than self charging?

Cheers for any feedback.

The RAV4 PHEV is available with a pan roof. I have one from 2021 and getting the GR Sport version in a couple of weeks also with pan roof. This was essential for me. I like light in the cabin. Interior is drab so the light helps a lot. I also like it open in summer driving through the forests.

I'm just shy of 6ft3inch. I have loads of headroom on the 2021 model. Seats have changed in the GR Sport so that could be a reason?

Passenger seat does however have a headroom issue on the 2021. Fixed by slightly reclining the seat. My wife is 5ft9 and had to recline it slightly.

I am surprised there are headroom issues. My wife is also 5’9” and doesn’t have any headroom problems whether driving or as a passenger. I am 5’10” and a bit and even with the drivers seat on its highest setting still have more than enough headroom to spare. There is no difference between HEV and PHEV. Are you sure you had the seat adjustment buttons correct utilised? We had a Lexus NX courtesy car for a few weeks over the last couple of months and found it had less headroom albeit still plentiful.

I have a panoramic sunroof and absolutely no problem with headroom. My only problem is folding myself into the seat if it's at full height, there's usually a bit of a fight with the top of my head and the "A" pillar.

Rav4 is usually the only new Toyota on sale in uk that when seated in it doesn’t feel claustrophobic., but actually very roomy and airy with plenty of headroom and legroom. Bz4x has slightly more legroom but horrible position of the rear seat base, so your knees will get fatigue when seated for over 10 min.

All other models are like a cave inside and particularly chr and Corolla.
New chr with black roof lining and windows is a cave at night.

I have just taken delivery of new RAV4 PHEV GR Sport with pan roof.

I’m 6’2” with a long spine.

Headroom is okay, but you might find your extra height means you brush the roof. Seat doesn’t seem to go low enough, and I’m finding resting my right elbow on the door uncomfortable, the support of the door is too low, so can’t rest my arm properly on motorways, etc.

The other slight issue is my left knee sits against the centre console, and on long journeys can be felt. Have invested in a cushioned pad to stick to the side of the centre console.

Other than that, I love it. My previous car being a BMW 3 series, so quite a variance.

Hope that helps.

I do agree re the door arm rest height, it literally can be a pain with its positioning. Style over function.

@IG6, left knee issue can be solved by buying a stick on pad. I’ve done this, as many others have, and it works very well. Check out Amazon, other online shopping outlets are available, and search ‘car console knee pads’.

Door rest height has been too low in almost every car apart from my Rover P5 which was adjustable.

I'm 6ft4 in a GR PHEV.
No issues at all with headroom/legroom for me.

Only issue I've noticed is centre console plastic a bit harsh on knee on 2+ hour journeys. Just need to re-shift driving position occasionally, then not an issue for me.

Buy a self adhesive knee pad to stick onto the centre console. Really makes a big difference, Amazon do a few options.
