Collected the new car in June and have been very happy with it until a couple of weeks ago when what I initially thought was a scratch appeared coming up from below the wiper blade in the centre of the screen.

As it's now got progressively worse,  and since I had a similar incident with the previous CH-R that Toyota claimed was a stone chip,  I advised my insurers (it's a company car) and was directed to Autoglass who have ordered a replacement screen - no idea on the time frame for this.

After reading on here about design faults,  I approached Toyota yesterday and was told that they needed 'a couple of days' to inspect the car ,  and then the repairs would be completed off site (probably with Autoglass anyway I guess) and as they have no courtesy car available for a oouple of weeks, I need to be prepared to be without the car for an indeterminate time.

As I've now set the ball rolling with Autoglass / insurers I'm basically hoping the crack doesn't get any worse while I wait on their call.

I've asked insurers this morning if it is acceptable to cancel Autoglass,  and if it is I'm considering going into the dealership to demand they sort me a courtesy car

Safety-wise you should be okay; I had a 1.5ft crack in my windscreen and was driving around with it for ~3 months waiting for Autoglass to pull their finger out before my insurer gave permission to go elsewhere.

Almost all windscreens are 2 pieces of glass with a laminate sandwiched in the middle, and as long as the crack is only on the outside, the inside pane will still provide structural support.

I will say try to avoid higher speeds and bumpier roads just to minimize stress shocks causing the crack to grow, but after the first month once the crack stabilized I must admit I was less diligent about doing that

Would this be the new "low noise" glass recently reported to being used the Cross  recently  to reduce the wind noise?

Autoglass or similar can use a round grind bit (same as dentists use to smooth filings) to put a small indent on the glass at the end of the crack, it will stop it spreading further. You could do it with one of the mini tools if you are confident enough.

Can you check if the damage is on the inside or outside ?

In Italy a lot of MY24 Yaris ( both HB and Cross ) are suffering of windscreen cracks and Toyota is replacing them in warranty.

Probably in Italy is more frequent due to hotter climate.

Usually the crack starts fom the camera area and spreads down to wipers area.

The cracks are usually on the inside.

I suggest you to contact your dealer before involving insurance or Autoglass.

>> Camera area

My guess is localized temperature differential due to the camera/sensor. I noticed all kinds of oddities in this area (misting, water accumulation from condensation)...all because of the camera housing.

I noticed on the facelift version (with TSS 3.0) that they put a heating element in this area, presumably to alleviate these issues.

Not related to the OP problem, but interesting.

Tbh i get condensation in  the camera area in the winter. This is fixed by windscreen blower on for 5 min.

Ironically that's what the heating element mentioned is there for - To de-fog the ADAS camera!

I found out not that long ago the whole reason those weird black dots all around the edge of the wind screen is to mitigate the different expansion rates of the different bits of the glass - If these cracks are due to thermal reasons we might be seeing different dot patterns!

The crack on mine was, I suspect, caused by stress on the windscreen, and exacerbated by something hitting it in just the right place, as it grew really quickly.

I wonder if versions with the heating element suffer windscreen cracks (and what activates the element; demist setting on heating controls, heated rear window switch?)

Maybe your crack was caused by something hitting the screen ( and if it hits the right place also a small stone can cause disasters ) but on MY24 usually the windscreen cracks by itself.

You park your car wth a perfect windscreen and after some hour magically you find a cracked windscreen. Probably something is not allowing a correct thermal expansion of the glass.

Probably is software controlled.  If the camera module detect that camera is blind due to mist on the glass, it activates the the heating element to clean the camera area.
