the icon Corolla base price is over £30k now so they could be finding issues with future private sales. PCP costs are high too unfortunately. Trade in value of a 1 year old Corolla is under £20k so a big drop

I’ve had a Yaris cross loan car, they are a more reasonable £25k but there is some annoying penny pinching. Wired Apple CarPlay instead of wireless in many new cheaper cars.

A design 1.8 with PCP contribution on carwow is 28k, that's quite high a price for a compact car. Yaris design is about 2.5k more than mine last year, at 22k, granted there are some upgrades.

New cars are costly now not just Toyota of course, money are tight, there are not many private buyers buying new which isn't surprising.

I think this is why I have an unreasonable hatred of SUVs - The Mk1 and Mk2 Yaris did ALL of that - The Mk2 especially you could just step into, so effortlessly, and at the highest seat position you could see over most cars. If you slid the rear seats forward it had more boot space than most SUVs, and if you slid them back it had more leg room than most SUVs!

^^ Totally agree. As somebody with a disability, access - height and how wide the door opens - but also the driving position, specifically the relationship between seat, steering wheel and pedals is critical. Some new SUVs just don’t work for me, the Lexus UX for instance is just too low but looks like it should be fine. The LBX was similarly a non-starter (as well as being far too expensive imho). The Mazda CX-30 was also dismissed for similar reasons. However, some normal hatchbacks such as the latest Golf, are fine whereas the Golf based T-ROC was hopeless. Go figure…seems a lot of them are just styling exercises.

Even I think I sound crazy when I say this, but a car that looks ‘high’ but which has a low mounted seat which isn’t sufficiently adjustable is often worse for me than a car that looks ‘low’ but has a higher mounted seat! Over the years I’ve established that Renault generally ‘work’ for me, but BMW and Audi are hopeless - even their SUVs. Honda are generally good too.

I actually wanted a Corolla due to the deals on offer, but it was far too low for my needs and the seat/pedal relationship didn’t suit due to the offset. The CH-R did suit, similar to my previous three Lexus (2xNX and 1xRX) but you’d be surprised how different cars you’d expect to be similar are when you have such specific needs!

I'd heard the 23 facelift Corollas are a bit higher than the previous model, it may make a difference.

Certainly the first 2019 Corolla I drove seemed very slow, same as the Honda Civic too.

Manufacturers seemed to go for 'sporty handling' and make their cars lower than needed for a normal model.

That has definitely been one of the downside's of Akio Toyota's direction change for the company - The Mk1 and Mk2 were very OAP-friendly cars, but the Mk4 is lower and wider than any previous Yaris - The has made the handling amazing but it has been at the cost of ease of entry, esp. at the back!

One of the reasone we got rid of our Lexus IS300h was that every time I go in and out of it I'd bang my head.

Much easier getting in and out of the Rav4.

I know there are warranty differences, spec' variation, dealership concerns etc but there are a number of unused 24 plate pre registered Suzuki Swace floating about atm for £22995-£23500. About £9k less than the list price of a base model corolla TS.... starts to make the Swace quite attractive.

Suzuki are discontinuing the Swace by early 2025 - sooner if stocks run out.

my locals all want list atm & there appear to be very few in stock. With current deals I can get a 2.0 TS Excel for similar price to a 1.8 Ultra 😮

The demonstrators are also starting to be released by dealers for this reason.

I will probably go for corolla because I suspect spares will be slower sourced by Suzuki dealers and their limited dealings with the swace/corolla compared to Toyota technicians doesn't bode well. Also their warranty can be extended up to 7 years (on the dot) by servicing whereas Toyota will go to 10 yrs 11 months with suitable timing of the 10th service.

Swace servicing every 9k miles vs 10k for Corolla. Swace servicing for first 7 yrs costs more than Toyota but includes more as standard (eg water pump is replaced at 6 Yr service).

Swace resale will be lower but if I keep it 9-10yrs that isn't too relevant.

Basically Swace is about £4-5k cheaper (if you shop around for both) when new/pre registered.  If nothing goes wrong it is the correct financial decision. If anything serious goes wrong between 7-10yrs eg Battery needs replacing the corolla is the better buy.......????

Haven't looked for about a week but last week there were 4-5 unused 24 plates between £22.5 and £23k like the 2 below. Admittedly Motion rather than Ultra spec. But for reasons detailed above I decided to hold off for a corolla...... when one comes up at the right price!

The printout from my local Suzuki dealer says that it is slightly cheaper for me (I won't be doing 9k per year)

I have been tracking low mileage/ex dem etc. Corolla TS for a while now. Given the changes for the MY23 I wouldn't buy 1 before that. An 18 month old 2.0 Excel is ~ £28k, a brand new factory order MY24 (& given that delivery is currently running into November potentially a MY25) TS 2.0 Excel is ~£32K.

Toyota seem to charge set amounts but Suzuki vary more it seems on the basis of the dealerships I've spoken to.

One gave me 2 options for the 7 years. Full servicing for the first 3 years to comply with manufacturer warranty and then 'basic' intermediate and full services at £219 and £299 for the next 4 years to retain additional warranty OR following their schedule correctly for the full 7 years which cost about 50% more (because it included water pump replacement etc). One option was cheaper than Toyota one more expensive.

There's a 23 plate (face lift) Design near me atm for £23,500 done 10k miles which is the most attractive (to me!) I've seen.

I fully agree on going for face lift version.

Here in Scotland facelift Corollas are rare, only ones I've really seen are taxis. However, it feels like every second car I see is a Yaris cross or a CHR (the new model)! The new lexus lbx are also getting popular.

Probably indicative of the general direction the market is going and the herd mentality we have here means everyone is going for SUV/crossovers.

Wouldn't be surprised if the current Corolla touring is the last estate car Toyota will make.

I’ll be immensely sad if that’s the case, it’s my first proper estate and have only owned coupes and saloons before, it makes me feel like I’m getting parenthood right by owning this car. Never in my life have I wanted an SUV.

Yes everything has to be an SUV still. Maybe they'll bring the Corolla Cross to GB after all...

I hope the SUV will go out of fashion one day!??

I hope SUVs shuffle off to buffalo but I fear it won’t happen.

The service light on my Swace is set to 10k when I picked it up. I do around 17k a year so the 7 year warranty doesn't bother me as i will no doubt hit 100k before that. I guess it's down to how close the dealerships are to you and spec of the car for the price. I do not feel short changed by going for the Swace and the dealer has been great and the first service was cheap in my opinion. Oh and the heated steering wheel is a luxury I never thought I would ever need but it is great on those cold mornings. Looking at the engine it seems very easy to service so I will probably do it myself once out of warranty.
