Garmin Satnav won't work in cigarette lighter

I have a 2009 reg Auris.  I tried to use my Garmin satnav in the cigarette lighter without success.  The satnav works in a friend's car, the cigarette lighter itself works.  The satnav/cigarette lighter combination worked in my old Mercedes.  I saw a reference in another post to a 12 volt socket - what is this?  Where is it?  I'm new to Toyotas and would like to know what is the solution to htis problem.

Are you plugging the satnav into the cars direct usb socket or the cigar socket

If you are using the cigar socket, does the power led come on? If not it may just need twisting around or pulled in pushed out to make full spring contact with the socket

yes, I'm using the cigar socket direct.  No, no light comes on.  Have tried pushing the satnav connector in several times more firmly to no effect.  As far as I know, there is no usb socket in the car.  Any other suggestions?  (Very grateful for your attempts so far!)

Hi,

try inserting another accessory like phone charger and see if it works.
If your 12v socket has power and other accessories works when plugged in means that the one that doesn’t work is either not properly plugged or not compatible. Some chargers are rated for higher load and can not work.
For example if you try to charge a power bank of small charger it will connect but not charge at all.

What have you plugged into the cigarette lighter to show that it works? Is that still working? Wondering if for some odd reason a fuse has blown?

I too have a Garmin (a now pretty old Streetpilot model) and that powers up fine in my 2017 RAV4.

Maybe a photo of where you're plugging in might help?

Look at your plug it will have two spring contacts on the side. Look inside your socket, is it all metal or shrouded in plastic. Those springs need to make contact with the metal.

I get that problem with certain lighter plugs which you need to pull/push twist until it makes connection. Much easier if you have a power led on the lighter plug.
