Weird Noises From Front Drivers Wheel

hi all,

for a week or so now i keep on hearing these weird noises coming from my front drivers side wheel. i get the noise sometimes when driving straight but most of the time when turning to the right. its not constant as it only sometimes makes the noise.

i was thinking that there was a stone or grit stuck between the pad and disc but surely that would've gone by now?

i've had sugestions that it could be either a driveshaft or a CV joint but haven't actually taken it to a garage

i'm going to silverstone at the weekend and i dont really want to lose bits of car on the way.

p.s. i have taken the wheel off and nothings seems to be wrong, but i couldn't work out how to get the calliper off

it was basically just a medium pitch scraping sound, not like ear piercing or really loud. only when turning right, and doesnt really do ti when the cars running from cold. was quite bad yesterday afternoon, but then when i went out with my dad to see what he thought in the evening it wouldnt do it

what sorta prices am i looking at for repair on either CV or wheel bearing. car got driven into the other day aswell so looks like a big bill on the way. and should i refrain from driving it?

CV joing should be about 35-50 mate and does not take to long to fit  If it's the wheel bearing I had a shock it was 120 for the kit :eek: But that was because I have 20v disks at the back

but from what i say do you think its one of those? or could it be a stone? as surely that would've gone by now

If its the CV/ball joint there should B play in the wheel. jack the car up and wiggle the wheel top to bottom. If there is play in it, it will be one of these.

Also, i would check your brake pads as these car cause scraping sounds when low!

Maybe look behind the wheel and see if there is grease splattered around. maybe the CV boot has come abit loose and a stone went in there?!!

Good luck NEway m8. Little noises R always soooo annoying!!!!

wheel bearings make a droning sound all the time , not just cornering - all the time.

a cv joint is more likely the cause when cornering but if the gaitors are ok and not split ,unlikely to be that.

is the wheel getting really hot , like burning hot - sugests caliper sticking.

to check a wheel brearing jack up 1 side at a time engage first and rev it upto 3000 revs , dip the clutch and listen for the droning sound , do each front wheel separate.the 1 making the most noise is the worn side.

cheers for the help guys. corollags - i was thinking low pads but don't know how to check as dont undrstand how you remove tthe calliper. plus i only had new pads in april. i admit i do give the brakes a bit of a battering but surely they cant be that low after 5k?

IF it is brakes....

See section in Workshop submission forum on removing brake pads..

Ideally you need a G-clamp, spanners, socket set and Torque wrench (for caliper sliding bolts).

Check the caliper piston rubber surround retaining clip and rubber surround are intact, otherwise water may get into the piston bore and cause sticking.

Check piston movements by pumping brake pedal a few times, and pushing back down with G clamp.

If things are sticking do not put oil based lubricants like WD40 on it, it can rot the seals if not cleaned off.

I find brake fluid works well.

By the way, has anyone seen a Haynes manual for Corollas 98 ->,

I have been in several Car access. dealers and never seen one, they are all 92 - 97.

Also thanks to others for tips on checking bearing wear.

ok well that random noise has gone now, so i'm thinking it was just a stone,

but i have now developed a high pitched squealing/whining sound, which isnt loud but just doestn sound right

Dude if all the sugguestions above haven't helped or you're still unsure, then take it to a Kwikfit or the like for a free check.

From what you have described, it sounds like low pads, These can be inspected by removing the wheel and looking through the little hole (pad inspection gap) on the caliper. If there is less than 2mm of pad material left then it's definately them.

Most calipers will also have a "low pad indicator" of sorts. It's usually a spring that will touch the disc and "squeal" when the pads need changing.

If the pads are new, sometimes there are metal fragments in the pad compound which can also cause scraping or squealing sounds. There can also be a build up of carbon and dust that will cause odd noises (squealing).

Read through my "How-To" in Workshop Submissions there are some photos that may give you a better idea
