Hi all,

I’ve maxed out the space in my lovely little IQ. Before I resort to the horror of buying a different car I wanted to explore the option of getting some luggage on the roof for a trip away in a few weeks. Lots of conflicting information online but anyone got any experience with this? What did you use? Is it ‘kosher’ as far as insurance etc is concerned? What about load bearing and all that kind of thing? Basically if someone has managed to do this successfully, links would be great so I could just get the required stuff and get on with my trip and brag to the haters about not having to get a bigger car 🙂

Thanks in advance for casting an eye over this!

As far as I'm aware the IQ has a zero load capacity for the roof (ie. Inclusive weight of roof rack/bars, box/bag, and luggage).

However there are roof bars available which are said to be compatible with the IQ.

As regards insurance, different insurers may have their own view on whether or not to accept the use of roof bars. Best to check with your own insurer, rather than rely on views from forum members.

Your choice.

I do recall the iQ Manual warns that accessories like this would invalidate type-approval and are not advised. It isn’t just the use of top-boxes, but a slew of after-market stuff, from cycle carriers to towbars.

I got round the capacity problem by removing the rear seats - they really served minimal/no useful purpose, and this meant all the space in the boot became available.

JDM spec then, a few of the JDM IQs are 2 seater

Thule make a rack rated to 50kg but it's not cheap as you need the bars, foot pack and a short roof kit as well

Thule 1547

Thule 774

then bars to suit

type approval is only for new vehicles, as soon as it's delivered and off the dealer's site. you can essentially do anything you like to it thule used to make a rear bike rack, IQ THULE RMC KIT - 510134 even Toyota had an official one that was made by thule PW962-00010

True - however it is then a non-standard modification and as such an insurer can crucify you should you attempt to make a claim even if the accessory was not the cause of the accident, if you do not explicitly have it noted as a 'modification'
