2009 1,8 whining on acceleration

Hi All,

I know this is a reoccurring issue but let me start it again.

I have my 2009 1,8 manual and it has a whining noise when in 5th and 6th gear and especially when I push the gas pedal when accelerating. When I release it the sound goes away.

The car has 135000 km on the clock. Never changed gearbox oil as far as I know.

If there is a solution please let me know, I don't want to live with it.

Hm, low revs and high torque sounds like bearings to me.
You can try a new transmission fluid but in some cases the noise may become louder after new oil been replaced. If not that horrible loud just leave it unless of course you want to spend a lots of money for new transmission or rebuild.
Is it really that bad ?

Not that bad, I was anyway  planning to change the gearbox oil. Hope the sound will be gone or is it related to the clutch? In some other posts this sort of whining also seemed to appear "normal". Is it a common issue on these transmissions?

If the noise is bothering you or seems to be getting worse, getting a mechanics opinion would be an idea to ensure there aren't possibly underlying issues with the clutch or other components.😃

The six speed manual gearboxes in both our Auris 1.6 petrol and Avensis 2.0 diesel became whiny over time. Changing the gearbox oil made no difference to the noise in either car. I got a gearbox specialist to check the box in the Auris who said the sound was quite common and not to worry unless it got very noticeably worse. It didn't get any worse, so I learned to ignore it. Both cars have since been sold and are probably still whining away with their new owners 🙂

I just got a tip since I am anyway changing the gearbox oil. A guy told me to kind of "overfill" a little for the oil to easily reach gear 5 and 6 to have better lubrication. Manual says 2,4 litres and add 0,1 l on top.

Is it a workaround or shall I just put in the recommended quantity?

Just put recommended quantity and nothing on top.
And when you refill don’t just put 2.4 Ltr, but add two ltrs and then just add slightly until start dripping out and stop adding oil.
Many times you can’t drain all the oil out and the transmission will take only 2ltrs  for example or 2.2ltrs , if that’s the case don’t force more oil in as final result can be 2.8ltrs instead of 2.4 Ltr total.
In transmissions and differentials slightly less oil is better than slightly more.

UPDATE: I have checked the gearbox oil, leveled the car and it turned out that there wasn't enough oil filled...removed the leveling bolt and added approx. 0,3 l from the top filler bolt. Started to drip and dripped 0,1 l out.

The noise that I mentioned previously is quieter than it was, but it is still there. It could also be that my hearing is getting worse as I get older 😃

Just a quick question. If a bearing in the gearbox has such sound, what can it cause?

Worn out bearings comes as a result of poor lubrication and or overheating. These can result from trashing the car ( drive like on rally) or driving through deep waters or wrong oil filled up if ever replaced.
There are possible more scenarios but these are most common.
