My next door neighbour has decided her Lexus is too big for her and I recommended she get an Aygo.

She has found one but I think it is a tad dear.

It is a 2020 1litre 5 door with 15k miles and it is £12k.

It was bought from Toyota by a local garage where she gets her servicing done a couple of months ago. Presumably Toyota do not retail cars over a certain age and trade them. They sold it a guy about six weeks ago but his health has gone down the pan and he has given up driving so is selling it back to them.

I am going to look at the car tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon so any comments or advice, what to check. I doubt there will be much to check.

Looking on Auto Trader 20/21 models seem to range up to £12K. Obviously depends on grade and whether manual or X-Shift.

I think it is auto. I did not consider that actually. I would always assume small cars to be manual but modern autos are much different from the ones I used to fix. I still have nightmares about mini automatics. 🙂

I would be wary that it might have a hidden history...Toyota would sell retail so for them to move it on would be a red flag to me...has it been involved in a bump, service history poor etc.

Only way to check is view it and ask lots of questions and then if still interested do a vehicle check with one of the many companies.

Let us know the outcome.

So my thoughts about it being too old for Toyota is not correct then. They would normally sell a four year old car through their normal retail channels?

I checked DVLA and the last V5 was issued in April this year so that cannot fit in with the story they have told her about some sick bloke buying it six weeks ago.

The more I look the more question marks appear.

My local dealer is Vantage Preston...they are selling as of today a 19 Plate Aygo with 38000 miles so Toyota would have retailed this vehicle.

The story sounds a bit c--k and bull to me and there are plenty of approved Aygo's for sale so i would tell your friend to keep looking.

So, in the end I took her to the local Toyota dealer and she has arranged for them to bring a Yaris and an Aygo a week on Monday for her to test drive. She has a shared drive, middle two houses of a four house terrace so we both share with the outside neighbours and it is a diddly of a reverse round a corner. Been here almost thirty years and my faten still modifies whatever car she is in.

Also looked at the Aygo her garage has for sale. It is an auto and is ex mobility. It is in excellent condition and is actually a few hundred cheaper than the same sort of offerings from Toyota.

In any event she has decided to hold off a few days, a lot of personal health things going on right now and springing this on her is just too much for her to think about this week. My faten is orft to Greece for a week from Sunday so I told the neighbour she can have her Citroen still she comes back.

Her current car has just dramatically failed the MOT so she thought she had no choice but I have looked at her car and no way should it have failed on such a list. Considering an appeal against the MOT fail or maybe just do what is needed as cheaply as possible then get a few more months out of it until she is more in the correct frame of mind.

Her current vehicle is a 2005 Lexus RX300, she has had it for over fifteen years and after she test drove the Aygo yesterday she is beginning to understand why I said she would not like it after the Lexus. I am seriously thinking of buying her car from her. She has offered it me for £600 and for an RX300 of that age with only 52k on the clock it is a bargain not to miss I think. It seems a very similar car to my Landcruiser that is long gone ten years ago. The only downside is the horrendous MPG figures. It has a very nice reg number, three letters and single digit.

I do not know what her garage are playing at regarding mending it but they have quoted her £2200 for parts. From looking at the car it needs rear discs and most of the suspension bushes round the rear axle. I guess they must be quoting full up retail on parts from Lexus. I reckon £500 would easily cover all that it needs in terms of bushes and brake bits using third party bits.

So basically no conclusions and all in the air still.
