I have a 62 reg yaris Automatic and the engine has just given up. We are trying to find a compatible engine but they all seem to be called 1NR-FE, regardless of whether they are auto or manual. Does anyone know how I find a compatible one - I found one on eBay that said it was the correct number and for an auto but they said it would not fit ours because it was an import not a uk engine. We are very confused and it looks like our only option will be to scrap the car, so any advice would be appreciated.

Hi,

what is wrong with the engine exactly and why there aren’t options to repair?
Putting in a replacement engine should be sourced by the people who will fit in the engine or ideally provided and fitted by the same garage to have warranty. Replacing engine with used one from another car always brings risk of something else goes wrong or have not been put correctly.
Engine code if the same then you should have no issues. The transmission end might be different if it comes from manual car or different type auto but parts from your original engine should be possible to transfer to the new engine. All depends on what your mechanic sees and what he can do.

Hi, thanks for the reply, the garage said that there seems to be lots of problems, a belt (possible timing belt?) had slipped and it looked like something had leaked, some valves appeared to be open that shouldnt have been, and he said that it would be easier to replace the whole engine. No-one around us supplies used engines for the auto yaris, the only place that would fit one is about 200+ miles away from us with any warranty. At this point it looks like we will just have to scrap it

Bit weird... Toyota engines use timing chains and are generally quite bullet-proof unless maintenance has been neglected. They don't generally skip timing unless the tensioner's gone, which usually results in a fairly noticeable rattle and weird engine behaviour until the chain snaps or something gets worn from all the slack and catastrophic engine damage results.

I'm not a big fan of the pre-CVT automatic Yaris and personally would lean towards scrapping it or parting it out and maybe getting a hybrid Mk3 or something like that...?

Alas the hybrids tend to be in demand so their prices tend to be quite a jump from the normal non-hybrid models

62 plate is a mk3 so its a CVT only mk3 mmt was the diesel

its not uncomon for the 1.0 and 1.33 engines to have chain issues usually from lack of proper oil changes or being ragged by young whipper snappers, the tensioners let go, it is driven with chain slap and it grooves the heck out of the guides and takes the teeth off the sprockets

Ah thanks for the correction; I thought it was only the later Mk3's that had CVTs!

The mmt was killed off after the Mk2 (petrol), Mk3 diesels got the MMT auto as the CVT does not like the torque or low rpm
