Hi everyone,

I'm looking at getting the new shape Corolla (1.8 litre) - I did a test drive around the town and got 60mpg.

Most of my driving is motorway driving down the M40 - what do people get for mpg on the motorway?

I know Corolla's have great mpg, but not sure if the hybrid system is best suited to driving a lot on the motorway.

Thank you for helping me decide!

Hi and welcome.
The fuel consumption on motorway will be very similar to town driving if you stay within speed limits or slightly below., so around 60mpg.
More mph equals less mpg like in any other car. Worst case scenario you will be looking at low to mid 50’s mpg.
Summer vs winter will be between 5-10 +/-.
I have Auris and I do around 200 miles a day mostly motorways and city drives summer time average is 60mpg where winter goes down to 50mpg.

Mine is 22reg with 122hp

Here are few trips I did these days - Mainly motorway driving, but we can rarely keep constant speed due traffic, or people who drive in the right lane even there is no one in the left or middle one......

I have the facelift 1.8/140hp and most of my driving is motorway.

long term average over 10k+ miles is 60mpg. In winter you might expect to lose 5mpg as it will be burning petrol for heat.

the speedometer under reads by 4mph at 70mph, so 74mph on the speedometer is a genuine 70mph.

the journalists that get under 50mpg on test must be cruising at 90+ mph.

when I come off the motorway the mpg goes up, I can get 70-80mpg on country roads and below 50mph with a warmed up engine.

The weather and temperature make a difference.....2 of the trips here(It was one trip with a little break in the middle) I did yesterday- 16 degrees and rain pretty much all day, resulted in lower MPG. The other 2 pictures/trips on 20th of August - nice and sunny, around 24 degrees- same route 66ish MPG. Here is a trip on an A road trip with some stop and go traffic, and lots of roundabouts in a very nice and sunny day.

Depends on your speed and the weather. I bimble along motorways in lane one with the cruise control set to 60 and seem to get high 60s in good weather, low 60s in bad weather.

I tend to drive 70-75 on ACC if possible and  get around 55 mpg

They like it warm - warmer the better! Here's my best recent example of what's achievable in warm weather. 2.0 model and 3 years old, not the latest version. Year-round average is more like mid 50s. I always take these individual journey reports with a pinch of salt. What goes in the tank vs miles done is king.

The facelifts seem to have been programmed differently for a warm weather cold start.

Previous models I've had would always start up the petrol engine the first start of the day to warm up the cat/engine.

Several times I've driven off in the Corolla after being parked overnight now in 20 degree plus weather and the petrol engine hasn't started until the main Battery is running low.

Same with my '19 Corolla as long as it's warm enough - 16c or thereabouts appears to be the turning point. It'll let me tootle around on electric even if the EV button just beeps and tells me the Battery is too low.

It's only when it's below the magic temperature that the ICE will turn on after a seconds regardless of what I'm asking the car to do.
