Now before anyone says anything I am an old fogie and in my life I have owned a lot of machinery in the form of motorcycles both British and Japanese and moved on to cars when my daughter arrived.  I have since owned German/Japanese/ British/Korean/Italian vehicles most of which involved inserting a key and driving off. My last 3 vehicles were Toyota hybrids so I am sort of used to modern  instrumental complexities however the despite the fact that I love my CHR PHEV and I am an IT guy by trade so sort of used to complex controls the  current CHR leaves  me slightly  confused. This is simply because some of the controls do not have any indicators telling you exactly what their function is  unless you read the 187 page manual. Toyota should have placed easily recognisable symbols such as a fan  not meaningless dashes.

The whole AC/Climate controls are made more complex by an array of push and press down keys. A pretty illogical design in my humble opinion made worse by the fact that that some of the functions do not appear on the tiny little screen unless you press something. Modern technology has finally won and I am defeated.

It's not so hard - but Toyota don't make it easy by showing the image for a LHD car in the manual:

Ensure that the climate control is On and in Automatic mode - that will be switch L - the one nearest the driver!

Use switch E - the one below the temperature symbol nearest the driver to set the temperature that you want. Lift up to increase the temperature; push down to reduce the temperature.

Never, never, never touch any of the other buttons / switches on the lower rank ... 🙂 ... in practice you don't need to!

The 'unmarked' controls, control the thing that is illuminated in the panel immediately above each one - when the car is switched On! 😉

“Keep Calm and Carry on Pressing Buttons” 😉 usually works for me 👍😊

PS What’s an “Owner’s Manual” 🤔😂😂😂

Thank you guys I appreciate your comments glad we all have a sense of humour.🤣

The only good thing about all this that in time the only interaction you will have when travelling anywhere will be the commands will issue to a robot present  in a Johnny cab. An example of this can be be found in a Arnie Schwarzenegger film entitled Total Recall. This is now  more or less happening in San Francisco with Google being the operator and apparently its been a great success as there is no the driver so  no smell of BO, cigarette smoke, no belching  or farting, swearing or a driver being generally  obnoxious  so what's not to like.😃

As long as we don't go fully into copying the Johnny cab...

Phillip thank you for the diagram most helpful. When I used to run and manage a PC repair centre not too many moons ago the first thing I said to a sad and bemused customer who assumed his laptop/PC/IPad  was faulty , have you done RTFM.? It was amazing how many did not bother at all  as the cellophane wrapper was still on the packaging in the original box. I am guilty of that many times over as my main hate in life is manuals and cabling. I used to have a special bin in the shop just for discarded manuals. Whatever happened to something called quick user guide ?

You only need to turn Auto ON, AC ON and set your preferred temperature and no need to adjust anything anymore. If sometime for some reason you need extra cold or heat just adjust by one or two degrees down or up and the hvac will take care of everything. Less younn be play with these settings leas risk of getting bad smells and other ac related problems.

The much derided User Guide - that is, presumably, sitting in your glove compartments - holds exactly this information ... 😉

(and, no, I don't use mine either, preferring to go straight to the full pdf Owner's Manual but Toyota have tried! 🙂 )

That may as well be written in Gaelic and as clear as mud. 😊
