Hi all,

Seems that my Aygo has power in Battery but no crank at all. Anyone experienced the same? Tried to jump-start with my RAV but no success..

Might be the alternator isn't charging the Battery.

Can be anything from:

  • Weak Battery
  • Faulty starter
  • Faulty ignition switch
  • Most serious case, locked up engine

More than likely, Battery / starter / Ignition switch then locked up engine.

To confirm it is the Battery, get a battery tester and it will give you an answer straight away. E.g:

A multimeter can perform a similar task (make sure there are no less than 10.6v when you turn the key) but it's not as definitive as a battery tester.

If the battery is good, then check you've got +12v going to the starter solenoid when you turn the key.  If you got 12v but the starter refuse to click or anything, then a faulty starter.  Only trouble is, starter is kind of hard to reach on the Aygo (behind the engine, between the engine and firewall).

If you don't have 12v going to the solenoid, then very likely you got a worn out key barrel (at the steering column).

No dimming of the dash lights when you turn the key so I suspect a fault in the energising circuit to the starter motor. Could be ign switch, fuse, relay, broken wire somewhere etc...  Potential immo problem?

Just realised it is an Automatic (MMT), so that adds more complexity to the ignition system.

For example, if the brake peddle switch were faulty, the car will refuse to start (to verify, have someone outside and see if the brake lights were on when you step on the brake).

Likewise with gear position sensor.  However, I just saw the N on the dash, so it should be okay.

Anyway, I doubt it will be an immobilizer issue because on the Aygo, the immobilizer cuts fuel to the fuel pump.  (The engine can still turn over, but seconds after it fires up, it will starve the engine from fuel thereby shut itself).

If you've tried to jump start it, iirc it could have blown the big fuse behind the fusebox 120 amp ??

Apart from that my guess is starter motor fault
