2014 D4D T27 sluggish / lack of power

I have noticed in the last 2 weeks my Avensis 2014 D4D T27 slightly sluggish and lacking a bit of punch in the lower gears. Still drives ok in 6th gear on motorway at 120kph but does not feel the same when driving in 4th gear on country roads. No major works on it. Did a service approx 5 weeks ago with oil & air & fuel filter. No smoke or noise from engine. No lights on the dash. I put a litre of Dipetane in the tank incase it was bad diesel but it's still there. You know how your car should drive and it just doesn't feel the same. I have suspicion it could be the turbo but not sure. Anyone else experience anything like this?

Hi Martin,It cound be a few reasons why this is happening, carbon deposits in the EGR valve can accumulate over time, particularly in diesel engines. This build up can restrict airflow, leading to reduced performance, especially in lower gears. Given the age of your vehicle, this is a likely reason.

the turbocharger due to age, can start to lose efficiency. This may result in reduced boost pressure and sluggish acceleration, especially in lower gears where the turbo's boost is crucial for performance. Inspecting the turbo for wear or leaks would be a good idea..

Hoses and connections can degrade over time, potentially leading to small leaks that reduce turbo efficiency. Even minor leaks in the piping can affect performance. Check these components for signs of wear or leaks .😀

Hi Bper yes I stripped the air filter housing away to have a good look around the turbo which looks ok on inspection, without any testing. Do you recommend maybe a carbon cleaner for the EGR have you used one? or do you need to clean it manually. I drive the car a lot mostly on motorway I do approx 50km per year there is 240km on it now.

Hi Martin,Yes I would add a carbon cleaner, add it to your fuel tank and see if it improves the performance. If there’s no change, inspect or clean the EGR valve and turbocharger. Run a scan to check for any error codes if the issues persist it may be worth considering getting a garage to take a look, that way a mechanic can do a thorough check and clean the EGR system and turbo. But starting with a carbon cleaner is a good first step. 👍
