Hi,

No need to panicking or be extremely worried about your new car battery.
Just be proactive since you know about eventual battery problems and do few things to be ready.
Buy a jump starter pack and store inside the car , glovebox or under seat.
If you are not driving often and for long 30+ min each time when turning on the car , best practice is to disable all auto functions like auto folding mirrors, home lights , auto parking brake, and if possible these connected services.
You can use all these functions prior to locking the car, just when parked and before you turn off the car , fold the mirrors, apply parking brake if necessary, no need to do every time if your car is on level ground, just select P and turn it off.
Then these connected server, do you really need to see in your phone any information about the car when actually your car is front of you on your driveway?!
When washing the car start and keep in ready mode for the duration of your car wash 30-90 min. for example. Every time you start the car although there is no actual starter motor there are actuators that drain power, computers and relays so battery gets loaded and discharged, so it needs time to recharge afterwards. It’s not just unlocking and locking the doors or light up the dashboard, these drains very little but the brake booster actually does draw a lot of energy.
And finally if you don’t drive often and the car gets little use you can keep in ready mode once a week for 30-40 min and you will be alright, or connect to your battery charger.

Every Toyota hybrid post 2019 is a plug in hybrid. 👌

Some charge traction batteries, others 12v batteries 🪫 😅

Some fantastic information there, thank you for taking the time to reply

Newbie question, but as I don’t have the car yet and it is my first hybrid vehicle, how do I activate ready mode?

No worries.
Ready mode is activated when you start the car , step on the brake pedal and push start button. The car is ready to drive.

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to reply, it is appreciated more than you realise (I really was worried I’d made a bad choice)

For my piece of mind I am going to carry around a jump starter, does this seem ok?

Just ordered this, and will keep in the car.

Do you think I should get a CTEK charger and charge the Battery (as I don’t know how long it will have been stuck at the dealers)

If so, is this one ok?

If that is purely a Battery charger then it won't be an instant "get you back on the road" fix. With a Battery booster, as the photo you posted, you can get to Ready mode in minutes be charging the Battery and back on the road.

I have ordered a Gooloo jump starter to keep in the car for emergencies (pic 1), but was thinking about getting a CTEK charger to give it a monthly top up? (Pic 2)

Oh, OK. That is in line with the sort of advice given on here. Bear in mind too that many don't have any sort of Battery problems.

Thanks Fred

I can only hope I’m one of the majority and not the few then 🤞

The approach I'm taking is the Gooloo will get me back on the road and / or get me to a state where the car can recharge the 12v Battery from the Traction Battery which can take place on the drive in Ready mode. The Traction Battery should always have that capacity unless there's a wider issue. So given that I've managed for 18 months without a problem I'm going to rely on the Gooloo for now.

Some great advice and knowledge being passed on here - I hope these informed responses have done much to allay your concerns, OP!

For what it’s worth, my MY23 (delivered early 2024) 1.8 Design Hatchback has been flawless so far in over 6 months of ownership and has surpassed my expectations in terms of driving enjoyment, comfort, economy and lack of intrusiveness of the driver aids and safety systems. The 140 hp 1.8 has all the power I need for my purposes but I’m sure the extra grunt offered by the 2 litre will be beneficial at times.

Yes, I will feel much more confident carrying the gooloo around with me, that’s for sure!

I wasn’t expecting any of this worry when I plumped for this car… maybe I should have done some research on this forum first 😄

However thanks to all of you that have contributed to this thread, my fears have eased considerably.

Anyway, collection day tomorrow, so I’ll guess I’ll see how I get on from then 🤞

Glad you are enjoying your car!

Hopefully I can do the same

And yes, I agree some really great advice from people on here… really can’t thank them enough 🙌

If you're not in the habit of leaving it unused for long periods, you may find you never need it!

But it's always good to be prepared! :fear:

I've had mine nearly 2 years this November and roughly done just short of 4000 miles which works about a average of 38 miles per week, but in realty maybe some weeks  5 miles a week and sometimes around trip to Tesco's which is a whopping 1.2 miles, the other half uses it more than me to do the shopping or pops round to her friends, I'm lucky if I'm behind the wheel a couple of times a month. The only time it gets miles put on it when we have a short breaks to the Lakes and N. Yorkshire, off to Cornwall and Torbay for 8 days end of this month.

Never once had a problem with the 12v Battery but do keep a booster under the seat

Thank you

I am assuming you jump that Battery if you get the dreaded low Battery signs and symptoms?

I did read that if you have a completely flat Battery you can’t open the boot, but that there is a terminal in the fuse box you can jump it from?

Also I want to know more about whether there is a charger that just plugs into the 12v socket, instead of clamping on to terminals…

****, I have so much to learn!

There is a big jump start point in the fusebox under the bonnet. Lift the fuse cover and you'll see a big red plastic cover over the blade for this purpose. Clip positive there and negative to any earth/unpainted bolt. You can open the car with the physical key. This is all described in the handbook.

I have not received mine yet but the salesman said that you could connect to either the Battery or the fusebox terminal.

Afaik you still get  a (concealed) physical key blade so you can open the car drivers door with a flat Battery & then you could access the boot via the back seats if the boot won't open. if that's the case it may be easier to just go to the fusebox though.

&, yes, if there is a way to do it by simply plugging into a 12V socket that would be ideal. 🙏

As above, Toyota method is via fuse box. Recon or full charge may be better out of car, but emergency start is fusebox.

The 12V sockets are isolated when the ignition is off.

If your really worried and do leave the car unused for long periods you can disable some systems which are the cause for the Battery drain.

I think the big one is the keyless entry system, this can be set to turn off after 48 hrs I believe. You would then need the key to enter car but at least Battery won't be flat.

I’m just at the dealers now, waiting to collect my car

I will ask the handover guy how I turn off the keyless entry then

Thank you

Collected the car, and beyond happy

It looks stunning, and drives a dream

Really good handover experience too, where I asked lots of questions and didn’t feel rushed at all.

Cant stop grinning when I’m in EV mode… can tell I’ve never owned one before can’t you 😄

Just hope it lives up to the expectations, but I am really happy with my choice, and all the family think it is awesome too!

Here is a few pics from collection, I know you’ve seen loads of Corollas already, but I’m just so happy with it  😅

enjoy! 😄

I do like those wheels & prefer the black trim of the GR rather than chrome.

& I do like it in red albeit I have ultimately gone for a Juniper Blue Excel myself.

Great aren't they??

I don't know why the motoring press hates them so much - They drive better than any other kind of autobox, always so smooth and responsive.

I still haven't gotten over the novelty of my Yaris Mk4 - It switches between polite crawling and mad hooning and back again like no other car I've had

I have to say Toyota really knocked it out of the park with the latest hybrid systems and their TNGA platform - The driving dynamics in their newer cars are an incredible leap!

Now get the fun part of exploring all the fancy tech it has (The radar cruise and auto-steer are so good for otherwise boring motorway runs! )
