1azfse chain and tensioner help

I just got a vehicle with the 1azfse engine suspected chain snapped. - it sounds noisy like loose and non start so I took chain cover off and its not broken . I will try a new chain kit and tensioner . I have few questions if it had slipped a tooth would that be enough to bend valves ? do valves touch piston on this ? ~The tensioner for the chain seems to be external - so do I return cover and then slot it in - how does it tension ? should i change oil pump also ?
