New GRS PHEV... Everything working and then...

On our other Toyota, a Yaris (which is also Smart Connect and I assumed very similar to the system in the newer RAV4s), you can choose whether to use the key fob or phone for the profile. Then again, the Yaris system has wireless Android Auto as well as Wireless Apple CarPlay but I seem to recall the RAV only has wireless CarPlay and Android Auto is wired only so there may well be differences.

According to ChatGPT (AI) and after giving it the GRS infotainment manual this should be the case but I'm yet to discover the option to select key fob....

To add a new driver profile associated with a key fob in your Toyota multimedia system, follow these steps:

1. Access the Main Menu:

From the main menu, press the Settings icon.

2. Go to Driver Profiles:

Select Driver Settings or Profiles from the submenu.

3. Add a New Profile:

Touch Add New Profile or Connect your Account to start creating a new profile.

You will be prompted to log in or create a Toyota account, which is needed to register your settings in the cloud.

4. Link the Key Fob to the Profile:

During the profile setup, there should be an option to link the key fob.

Follow the instructions on the screen to associate the key fob with the new profile. This will enable the vehicle to automatically load the correct driver profile when the corresponding key fob is detected.

5. Complete Profile Setup:

After linking the key fob, complete the profile setup by customizing settings such as seat position, multimedia preferences, and climate control.

6. Save the Profile:

Once the setup is complete, the system will automatically save the profile settings and associate it with the key fob.

Now, when the key fob is detected, the multimedia system will load the saved profile and settings for the driver associated with that key.

Let me know if you need further clarification or steps!

I may need to try this again at the weekend. Just to be 100pc sure it's missing from the options.

If you don't have a phone with you because you don't want the police, Interpol, MI5, or Google tracking you, then just note that the car is tracked by Toyota and that data will be made available to the police, Interpol, and MI5 of they have legal cause. But not Google.

Nothing of the sort. I don't carry phone with me on short trips, because there is no reason to. I don't get called 24/7. Do you?

Furthermore, I only enable bluetooth on my phone when I am going to use it. No point to keep it enabled listening 24/7 every split second if I am going to make a connection, if I plan to make it two days from now when I connect my earphones in the gym.

If Toyota in the UK cannot function properly without a third party smartphone then this is unacceptable. They already have perfectly synchronized key fob, why only US can benefit from it?

This warrants checking with the dealer, what models are affected, I hope not all of them?

I've done too good a job to disguise my comedy commentary about MI5 etc. 😂

I'm going to have another look at this at the weekend but pretty sure on the new RAV it's bluetooth phone linked for profile loading. Doesn't stop you doing anything. Just means you'll get the default settings and be unable (probably) to recall destinations in the sat Nav like RV points, loot swaps, and drug drops. Or, just your home, Nan's house, or mate Ste.

Worth checking thoroughly. If I can't save nav points or driver seat positions because I my phone isn't yet glued to my body permanently, then that's pretty bad. I want to buy a car as as a complete device, not crippled one because I don't carry a phone with bluetooth on 24/7. 😳

Seat settings independent of profile. Profile covers a handful of settings relating to infotainment, in-built navigation, some vehicle settings. Driver display settings and other vehicle settings are set via the driver display. Seat position is a further seperate system although I thought there was a way of linking seat position to each of the fobs. Or just set seat position 1 and 2 on the buttons.

Suspect the driver for having profiles is related to privacy. Possibly some EU law. UK is Europe as far as multinationals are concerned but a minor market compared with the EU so Toyota has lumped us in because it's cheaper to keep things consistent. Car stolen or borrowed or in dealership and they don't have access to where you go, your contacts, etc.

Suspect many cars will go this route.

Could get a 2 year old version to avoid the issues.

An interesting point of view ...

You don't need to use a smartphone to identify a driver. You do need a Toyota account to save a profile, and use of a smartphone provides a quick way to identify yourself, but you can identify yourself in other ways or drive as guest.

I don't carry my 'phone around with me either - it spends much of its life just sat on my desk (with bluetooth enabled). But I do carry my 'phone when I am out in the car - how else can I call the breakdown service should I need to? And I've been doing so since long before 'phones became smart.

And these days it is becoming increasingly difficult to survive without a smartphone as a means of identification / authentication - so the vast majority of folk will have one ...

There is that option of course, but it is a relatively recent innovation, and I prefer to have a non-emergency option ... 😉

Smartphone... On the new GRS RAV at least, it appears to be the only way of identifying you and loading up your profile (linked to your Toyota account). Smartphone with bluetooth. I can't find the options to link fob to profile as they get in the US videos of what is largely the same new infotainment hardware and software.

So if no smartphone then you are in guest mode and the Infotainment orchestrated settings are set to default (AFAIK).

If someone can find the option on the new RAV infotainment system I'd love to know where it is.
