2013 Auris 1.6 petrol excel

Hello, I just bought a Toyota Auris 2013 1.6 for about 67k miles, the car is in great condition. I’ve been driving the car for about 14 days. When I went away with the car I read the dash reading for mileage to be 45-50mpg. Now that I’ve been using it. It says 30mpg and I do mostly motorway driving and some city driving so I know i should be getting by more. I did check the tire pressure recently and it was low, filled it up but the mpg hasn’t changed all that much.

This is my first ever car and I know I should be getting more than I get now for mpg.

Can anyone who’s been through this or know anything about this please help me out on what I should get checked? Otherwise the car is absolutely amazing. Id really appreciate any advice. Thank you

Hi and welcome.
Is the car manual or automatic?
How did you measure the mpg?
And how do you drive, what speeds ?
30 mpg can be very typical fuel consumption for 1.6 petrol on any car of this size , year, etc. , but it will depends on the questions above and what answers you have.
And lastly, do not read the dashboard readings about fuel consumption or range, these aren’t very accurate unless you drive a lot every day, then they can much real world numbers. The only way to get real numbers is to fill up the tank full, drive at least for 200+ miles , preferably even more, then refill full again and do your calculations to get the real fuel consumption.
These cars are reliable but not the most efficient. Hybrids will do better or 1.4d.

Hello, thank you for your reply. The car is an automatic. I read off the dashboard when it gave the avg fuel consumption. I do drive a lot everyday as I travel from cities about 22 miles going and 22miles coming. I don’t fill the full tank tho, I do about 20 pounds every time I need a refill. The car is quick as well. It’s just that when I bought the car from London and drove up all the way north I did get great fuel efficiency that time as well. And that time I did fill in a full tank. So I was just wondering why is it now that I get about 30mpg even if I travel on motorway a lot. I do drive around or above the speed limit with the flow of traffic on the motorway. I just wanted to know if it’s something I should get checked in the car?

30mpg for 1.6 automatic and your driving needs seems pretty normal to me.
Plus you have said, the car is quick and you are keeping up with traffic flow, which in todays times means you are racing with others.
You can get eventually slightly better fuel consumption 35-38mpg if you change your driving style and stop been part of the F1 commuter group.
No need to be irritatingly slow , but when you accelerate just set the car to around 2500-3000rpm and keep the engine revs there and give time to the car to gain speed. Once our have reached your desired speeds just maintain it and when the car goes uphill let the speed drops a bit and then on the downhill you can let it increase. Your car is by no mean fast and treat it as a such and drive relaxed style and you will love it even more and get better mpg. Regarding anything wrong, if no faults warnings on dashboard, there is nothing to worry about. Just do regular service, keep tyre pressure correct and you can try E5 99 premium fuel which is a lot better than regular E10:95. You get another 2-3 mpg up immediately. 👍

You’ll do well to get much over 36

My 14 plate  1.6 manual gets an actual 56-60mpg on dual carriageway driving if I sit at just over 60mph. At 70mph about 44mpg.  When I drive it hard on rural roads only about 32mpg.

Speed and style of driving makes a huge difference to the mpg - in my manual version.  Incredibly efficient when driven like an old man but, like anything, not great when driven harder.

The “F1 commuter group” comment really made my day. 🤣🤣👌🏼. But no you’re probably right, I’m a fairly new driver in UK and I may try to quickly reach destinations. I’m definitely going to drive more carefully and slower. Sometimes I feel like the driver behind gets annoyed if I’m too slow. Regardless, thank you so much for taking the time from your day and replying to my question.

Your automatic must be a CVT gearbox for that model.

Use cruise control when you can and go light on the pedal. Dont worry about the person behind you, he wont be helping you with any points on your license.
