MK1: Retrofit original extras - how difficult can it be?

Recommended Posts

Milady just turned 25 this year, and I thougt about a little birthday present for her.

When my dad originally bought the car in 2004, he bought the linea SOL and opted for a lot of extras, including aircondition, (custom design) leather seats, DVD-navigation. What he didn't include were fog lights and cruise control.

But how difficult can it be to retrofit these?

Part One: Front fog lights.

I imagine that getting a pair of fog lights aren't the biggest problem, and I have a few blanks that I can fill with a switch, however I can also buy a new light arm at a scrapper, and that arm is plug-and-play - am I right? I suspect that the plug it self is standard and aren't changed between fog light and non-fog light models, only the arm is different as it has an extra "switch". So far so good, right?

When it comes to the lights itself, original would be best, as they can probably be found at a scrap yard with the grills included, which would make my life easier and avoid bad cuts in the plastic grills I already have installed. But if I can't find original ones, I am wondering if any small ones would fit - and... do I have the plugs needed in my original wire harness? See this is where Part One gets tricky...

Part Deux: Cruise control.

Dear child goes by many names - skitzophreninc children by even more...

I often take the Yaris on relatively long motorway runs when I go instructing naval personel in speedboating or meetings at the academy. I don't like to take the Camry since it will be more comfortable for my wife who stay home with our son to have that car, but I do want to get the consumption down and the comfort up. This is why I have been considering adding cruise control in the Yaris.

Like in Part One, I will need an arm (scrap yard, eBay or private classifield) - and here I do not know if it is plug-and -play? Do I have the plug needed? Will an Avensis or Corolla arm work? (I mean many other switches and stuff are intercangable to cost reduce).

After this - do I need some aditional hardware - or is it just a wire going to the ECU?

I hope you can give an answer to these.

Enjoy your day!

fog lights are not a problem nice simple wiring with 1 switch (on the dash) and 1 standard relay, if you want the switch on the stalk - 84140-0D070

Being a sol model may have the wiring for the fog lights behind the bumper

Toyota used to do a kit

you can get new aftermarket fog lamps fairly cheaply made by TYC

Cruise
P10 and P90 Yaris never got cruise control. the Mk3 did but not on the 1.0 and its hit and miss on the 1.33 cars before 2014

Thank you for the reply; and.... yeah, I went through my model catalouge again and indeed there is nothing about cruise control. Aparently the American models had the feature enabled in end ECU and therefore theoretically could get this installed - but the European models don't have this feature enabled in the ECU, according to Cyker:

On 2/14/2018 at 4:40 PM, Cyker said:

If you find out different then let me know, but from my own research:

The Mk1 Yaris (1999-2005) has never had any ECU support for Cruise Control

The Mk2 Yaris (2006-2011?) has no support for cruise control in the Euro-spec 1.0VVTi, 1.3 VVTi, 1.33VVTi or 1.4D4D. However, the US 1.5VVTi *does* have support and can be installed with the addition of the cruise control module and stalk (Or just a bunch of resistors and buttons according to one video )

The Mk3 Yaris apparently supports cruise control except on the lowest spec 1.0VVTi version...?

This also fits perfectly the video I have later found where a guy is installing it in a sedan variant of the Yaris - and according to the console it looks like an MK2. So without some crazy 3rd party hack it seems that I need to keep by foot on the pedal. Fair enough.

For fog lights, I would prefer to use an original stalk. Again according to my catalouge, it does seem that fog lights were only standard on the T-Sport, and aren't shown on the model photos apart from on the T-Sport - except on the dimensions section where there are fog lights installed on what appears to a SOL:

... funny enough looks identically to the one earlier in the catalouge, which appears to be a TERRA due to the black bumper strips and mirrors...

So probably creative liberty...

But seems pretty straigt forward so hopefully I will get some time to take some time under the car to check for connectors and if everything is ready I just need to go look for a stalk, relay and of cause the lights.

A future project might become a functional radio - however here I a considering a modern solution which also can include bluetooth phone calls since my wife loves to call me while I drive but hate that I don't answer my phone...
Main issue is that I want volume control on the steering wheel to still function, and I am not sure if that is really possible, but that is a project for another time.

As unit, I would of course prefere that it is a Panasonic unit - what else would fit like a glove in a Toyota? 😉
