Hi guys,

I am looking for insurance and options available to insure rims for my car. What are the suggestions?
Can I get Toyota alloy insurance after 12 days?

thanks

Not sure Toyota insurance covers wheel damage. I'd think you need to get either a separate cover for the wheels or a specialist car insurance. Theft should be covered by the normal car insurance. I've never bothered with additional cover for wheel damage.

I was asked if I wanted alloy insurance when I bought my  cross, of course I declined, a few months ago I kerbed one of my alloys on our ridiculously high kerbs at work, my car was in for service and I was told that the guy they use for their repairs might be able to sort it for me, anyway he did, cost..£50. I guess you would need to weigh up the cost of insurance against the cost of repairs, you could not bother, but put some cash aside each month just in case..

Thats what happened with me,i hit kerb and guy is asking me 107 to repair it now.Now I wonder why I declined dealership option.

I looked up on internet for multiple alloy cover which are around 200£ for 3 years.

I mean there are separate toyota insurance which covers both wheel and alloy.

Thanks.Do you know how to get this insurance?I am unable to figures out.

Contact your Toyota dealer.

Also there are other companies offering similar products, so do a comparison of costs and cover.

Do you have any comparison or company name in hand? Like our car insurances

I bought alloy insurance with a Mini a few years ago as it had low profile tyres with no overhang. To use it I had to take it to their body-shop many miles away and leave it for a couple of days (I can't remember if I got a loaner).

Did that once and it was such a pain that the next time I got Chips-Away to sort it. Sold the car not long after.

So check the small print carefully. Money isn't the only factor.

No, but the usual comparison sites are a starting point.

Hah, I had the opposite, I got signed up for it without asking (I only asked for the GAP and Smart repair (Paint) insurance) - Completely useless to me since the first thing I did with the car was throw on the 15" steels, which the dealer alloy insurance doesn't even cover (It only covers the original rims that came with the car!), and I'd even explicitly told them I was going to do that, but thankfully got a full refund when I called to cancel.

It was surprisingly hassle-free to cancel. Sounded like they had calls like that a lot

A lot of companies do alloy insurance with varying cover, from cosmetic only to full replacement if it e.g. gets cracked. Just need to click through any automotive insurer's website.

TBH though, unless you're expecting them to get damaged there's little point; You'd be better of putting the money in an ISA or something. There are a lot of caveats on what's covered and even excesses to be paid and it can vary wildly between different insurers, so you have to read the policy docs very carefully (Also good advice for insurance in general; It's amazing what BS they can get away with in the Ts and Cs and still be legal)

You used to be able to buy alloy wheel trims ( alloy gators) that come in various colours and sit between the alloy and the tyre, it offered some protection against kerbing but, having never used them I can’t comment on how effective they are or even if you can still get them..

A quick google shows they are available..

Had them on an MX5 where the rims were wider than the tyre so kerbing was a given. They saved my rims a number of times.

When I bought my brand new Aygo X (now sold) I took out a Alloy Wheel Cover policy with the company below.

They have a good reputation and the customer services was excellent.

I never actually claimed , as I take care of my alloys and park properly.  It was mainly because it was a brand new car and piece of mind.

But you can claim on your car insurance for alloy wheel replacement or repair if damaged by incident, like you had to swerve and hit the kerb or went over a sharp pothole etc and depending on wheels prices and insurance excess will dictate whether to make a claim or pay out of your pocket. Similar to if you scratched your bumper or break a door mirrors. ., do we get a separate cover for that ! . ..?

Kerbing a wheel isn't an "accident" - its an unfortunate event.  If someone hits you and damages an alloy (or any) wheel or your mirrors etc etc, the insurance will cover the resultant damage.  If you are run off the road by another driver, or swerve to avoid an obstacle/person and the car/wheel is damaged, then your "fully comp" insurance should respond.

Same applies if you hit kerb or post while parking too. This could lead to kerbing the wheel and scratched fender too. Insurance should pay repair or replacement and charge you excess.
That’s why we have insurance and excess.

I imagine that for most people the excess on a wheel policy will be a lot less than their general car policy, so that would seem to be a benefit.

But as always you need to look at the numbers - extra cost of the wheel policy (and any excess on that vs potential excess (and NCD loss) of main policy. In many cases it's probably no more expensive to just sort it yourself.

There is no excess with wheel and tyre policy and it doesn’t affect NCD.

Others were suggesting claiming for wheel damage on their main policy and I was pointing out that such claims could (almost certainly would) affect their NCD status and future premiums. It is a bonus point for separate wheel insurance, but you need to balance the additional cost against your OCD.

Wheels get damaged or just rot. Both of ours have some issues but they aren't noticeable unless I look closely, like when washing them, and no-one else is going to notice them in day-to-day use. So I wouldn't bother getting them fixed until I was going to sell them - just get all the damage fixed once-and-done. Otherwise you'll spend all the time you have the car getting minor things fixed and then another blemish appears soon after.
