Hi, my sons Avensis started popping  up the EPB warning lights. We could see  & hear the brake accutator moving and the lever arm on the brakes. It worked ok then would intermittently pop up a warning. We read on a web page that if you do the emergency release then apply brkaes/drive fopr a short while it may recalibrate. After incorrectly turning the Hex key anti clock wise , we turned it clock wise, and it seems full disengaged (car rolls when pushed). But now when we try and apply the EPB we hear the acctuator motor try and run  but only for about 3 - 5 secs.  .. Have tried holding the EPB button doen for 5 to 8 secs but and it whirs but then pops up a EOB overheat warning.. Help.. how do we get it back working..Thanks

The EPB warning is like a master warning light that activates for a whole raft of different errors with the car. So it is quite likely that the EPB was fine and something completely different has an issue. From what I have read on here, the EPB only needs re calibrating after work has been done on the brakes (e.g. replacement pads being fitted). It is a stupid feature of these cars (and plenty of other models from other manufacturers) that the warnings often do not relate (even indirectly) to the system with a fault. Whenever you see a warning message, read the error codes stored in the ECU - these will tell you what is actually wrong.

The EPB will overheat if it is activated many times in quick succession. So you may well have just activated it too many times in quick succession while you were troubleshooting. It is now almost 24 hours since you posted, so it will definitely have cooled down now. So try again now.
