I had a new 2018 Passat with a DSG box and it was beautifully smooth. I only owned the car to 33K miles so didn't really test its reliability but till then it didn't miss a beat. However it was a factor in me deciding to move on when the warranty expired.

As far as the CVT box is concerned on my 2022 1.8, I'm very happy with it and certainly don't feel there's any lag, in fact quite the opposite. The reving is something I got used to, it's just the way it works.

I found it odd as well coming from 20 years of driving high torque low reving diesel manual cars to the CVT but after 8 months I have got used to it.   Firstly I spent a while with the dash meters set on tachometer just so I could gauge the engine noise to the actual revs as to start with the hybrid meter on it felt like I was caning the engine whereas in reality I rarely take it above 4k revs (2.0L).  Also the sensation is so different to accelerating through gears it feels slow but in fact is equally fast if not quicker to 60.   I have got used to it and let’s face it the days of manual cars are almost gone for day to day transport.   The jump from a manual petrol or diesel to a full EV is equally odd so think it’s just the way things are going in the evolution of cars.

It was an Uncle of mine who first introduced me to Toyota Hybrids. I had an Avensis diesal 2.0 at the time. He said have go in this. It was an Auris Hybrid. First thing that struck me was no clutch no gear shift no stalling. I loved it as it was so much easier and safer to drive. Approaching roundabouts was great as never getting caught out in the wrong gear etc. Both hands on steering wheel all the time. It was a breeze to drive. I was soon converted and ditched the Avensis for an Auris Hybrid within a month. Since that Auris I now have the Corolla 2.0 which is a massive leap in refinement all round.

Over the years I've driven many different cars and transmissions. The original CVT I drove over 50 years ago was the DAF 55 with belts and cones. A horrrible experience in icey conditions: when I was going down a steep hill on snow, I took my foot off the accelerator, the CVT went into a low ratio and the rear end started to turn round. BorgWarner autos were good but a bit sharp on 'kick down' and tended to creep. I loved manual gearboxes when I was younger, especially on challenging roads, but as I got older auto boxes were preferable in  heavy traffic. I've had three cars with DSG boxes and always found them very smooth between changes. However the eCVT of our Corolla is the best transmission I've ever experienced. No lag on accelerating, the different engine sounds don't bother me and overall it's a brilliant and economical car.

I used to have a 200+hp Lexus, which felt fast to accelerate.

while it was being serviced they gave me a CT200 which is an Auris hybrid underneath.

despite the difference in feeling, they were both actually reaching similar speeds at the end of an uphill slip road.

a lot of the 0-60 figures involve abusing the car with revving the engine while in drive before pulling away, whereas the Toyota hybrids are the same performance every time without any strain.

In the real world the Toyota hybrids are getting the same actual performance as cars that are supposedly faster on paper and feel faster but aren’t.

on our 3rd Corolla we both were like ducks to water , a bit strange at first but then a relaxing easy , lazy way to drive.
