Rust on roof / top of windscreen & Rust spots around vehicle

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone can help me with a rust problem with my RAV4 2014. The main rust is on top of the windscreen, between the roof edge and windscreen gasket (SEE PHOTOS BELOW). The vehicle also has dots of rust around the vehicle. They are very small, like 1-2mm.

I don't plan to keep the vehicle for long (maybe a year or two max). How can I tackle this issue to slow down or eliminate the rust from spreading?

Any advice would be most appreciated. Thank you.

Look like stone chips to me. A fair bit of careful rubbing down followed by rust prevention paint, undercoat and touch up paint. The results are only as good as the time and skill you apply to the job.

Or pay a body shop a lot of money to do it for you! Good luck with it

Hi @Terry10

Thanks so much for your reply.  Would any anti-corrosion grease or spray help stop the rust from spreading?

Due to the area being so small, I'm wondering whether I can use a flathead screwdriver and very lightly scrape and remove the rust?

Hi, If you want to slow down the rust without going for any expensive repair. I would use,

Wire brush/sandpaper (150-220 grit)

Rust converter (e.g., Hammerite Kurust)

Rust-inhibiting primer (Halfords or similar)

Touch-up paint (colour-matched to your RAV4)

Clear coat (optional)

Masking tape

Remove the loose rust, and sand the rusted area carefully, especially around the gasket, but avoid damaging the seal. Use a rust converter like Hammerite Kurust to stop the rust from spreading. Once dry, apply a rust-inhibiting primer. Follow up with a colour matched touch-up paint and add a clear coat for extra protection if you want.

After everything cures, waxing the car can help protect against future rust. For the tiny rust spots 1-2mm sand and clean, Lightly sand the spots and clean the area.Dab rust converter on each spot.Touch up with primer and paint using a fine brush or pen.

Hammerite Kurust (rust converter) – available at Halfords, B&Q.

Touch-up Paint

Rust Primer – available at Halfords.
This quick repair should help slow down the rust and keep your car good for the next couple of years.👍

Thanks very much Bper for the extremely detailed and helpful explanation.

I'm willing to do everything that you've suggested, but I've seen a few recommendations from other users, such as ACF-50 or mineral oil.  So would you mind me asking, what the difference is between Hammerite Kurust and the other two and which one you think is the best for the job?

Hammerite Kurust  vs. ACF-50  vs. Mineral Oil.

Hammerite Kurust is a rust converter that chemically stops rust and allows you to prime and paint over it. Best for treating existing rust, like around your windscreen.

ACF-50,is a corrosion inhibitor that prevents rust from forming or spreading. It’s great for stopping light surface rust and protecting areas from future rust.

Mineral Oil,is a basic moisture barrier, good for rust prevention but not for treating existing rust.

What’s Best for Your Job,Windscreen rust, Use Hammerite Kurust to stop the rust and paint over it.Small rust spots, you can use Hammerite Kurust, but ACF-50 works very well for light surface rust and prevention.ACF-50 is ideal for preventing rust in exposed areas. Use Kurust to treat rust and ACF-50 for prevention.👍

That's brilliant.  Thanks so much. I guess for me it'll have to be Kurust as the vehicle already has existing rust spots.  I'm hoping this technique will allow the car bodywork to last a year or two before I plan to sell it.
