top up gear oil on 2009 IQ 1.33 , 6 speed manual

Just in case anyone else is doing the job, here are a few photos showing how I topped up the gear oil on 2009 IQ 1.33 , 6 speed manual. Its on the transfer case and while you cannot see it you can easily feel it. You can see it if you use a small mirror and its fairly obvious its a filler plug. Its 24mm and has a label on it. First make sure the car is level. my drive slopes but with the car on ramps at one end its level. You don't need ramps or jacks for this job but I was doing my rust proofing after. To get at it I removed the air filter and the large cable connector which are above it. I then removed it with a 24mm socket. You then just pour  75w monograde fully synthetic oil in until the oil pours out.  I used relatively inexpensive comma oil from Halfords as I was only topping up with a small amount. If I was changing it I would probably use a branded oil like the Castrol. Experts tell me you should use a new washer when reassembling. I didn't have one so put the old one back. If it drips I will have to buy one from Toyota.

Thanks very much for posting all that, but please do yourself a favour - next time you go under that car, put some chocks behind those rear wheels. Just seeing that photo gave me the heebie jeebies.

Hope you don't mind me saying, but you only need a car to fall on your head once.

No don't mind you saying at all, I frequently give out safety advice.

The camera is not level in the photo but the spirit level on the roof is level and that's parallel with the road wheels. My drive slopes  down on the light grey bit. The drive is tarmac so the feet of the ramps stick in and the ramps will not slide. The car is in gear and handbrake  on.  Before starting work I give it a big shove in all directions just to make sure and of course when I am working that way round I am under the front. To do the back I turn round and reverse on the ramps.  The ramps are used regularly with a 2 ton classic car so I know they are strong.   If I am taking a wheel off then I do it all differently. I park in the road where its flat, jack up with a 2 ton trolley jack and then before going under I put 2 axel stands under and the wheel I have removed.

I prefer working under ramps to jacks as once its up there its not going anywhere. The only thing to watch is you don't overshoot the ramp end when driving up them which would be very expensive.

I did my yaris at the same time as the IQ and posted photos in the yaris section - https://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/223986-gearbox-filler-plug-location-133-6-speed-yaris-xp9-2011/#comment-1813871  NB the photo was taken at the getting it level stage. The axel stands and wheel went back under before my head did 🐵
