IQ wheels badly corroded

Hello,

Just bought a nice little 1 litre 2009 plate IQ and the rims are terribly corroded. I want to either have them refurbished or to get a new set of similar size aftermarkets. Would anyone be willing to offer me any suggestions on good prices and fits please?

Thanks

John

When I got my iQ, a year ago, I bought 3 unwanted wheels off eBay and refurbished them myself. It wasn't hard.

Give them a good wash & degrease, sand them down, set up a little 'spray booth' made out of corrugated card and simply spray colour, then lacquer.

I've sold 2 of them and kept the 3rd as a spare, but the following thread gives you some ide of the process...

The IQ has one of the most common sizes around - Aftermarket wheels there is tons to choose from it depends on what style you want to go for, dont go any larger than a 16" rim

JDM - Rota or Lenso are good brands for the money - if you want something not too fancy look at the Rota Grid

Euro - Borbet, Ronal

Sports/rally  - Speedline Corse

have a look at ....................

Been using rimstyle for well over 15 years

Aka Rochford tyres

as for refurb companies, there are plenty of them about, like

a few suggestions 😉

Thank you very much all, fantastic response.

I must say that after driving a hybrid Yaris for the last three years, I'm impressed with the features included within the 09 plate IQ. Auto folding side mirrors being one, keyless operation another.

From my relatively limited experience of iQ wheels, I've found that the corrosion looks worse than it is. In my experience it's only been fairly superficial - can be sandpapered out.

How is it on your wheels?

Discovered a firm in Rotherham to recondition for £60 per wheel. Reasonable I think.

These days, in the South East at least, £60 is a brilliant price.

Blimey! Those wheels are B A D !!!

I have seen wheels pulled out of a river in better condition,  i would be replacing them asap, the brakes are none too clever either - how many times a week do you need to put air in them as they must be very porous

is that rattle can black or plasticoat on the wheels ??

Oooh nasty, my first Mk1 Yaris wheels were not quite as bad as those, maybe half as bad, big chunks of paint delaminating from the rim. Seems to be a semi common issue with rims from that era for some reason.

Got them shotblasted, acid dipped, powdercoated and lacquered by a local place, which cost a pretty penny (Would have been cheaper to get used rims off eBay but insurance company said they'd count it as a modification  )

Just changed from a hybrid Yaris to an IQ, and swapped the insurance over (for a 25 pound fee). The insurance salesman then proceeded to increase my premium because I have recently been made redundant. It seems the lower you go the more you get kicked.

That is utterly appalling. How on earth does redundancy make you more of an insurance risk? It's legalised robbery. I hate the 'car insurance' scam.

Good luck in finding a job, mate.

Are these wheels any good (four for £45)?...

£45 each - choose any one of the four  😉

I guess, if all still available, he'd sell as a set

Really? Thanks. I'd missed that small detail!!! Not such a good deal after all.

Only corrosion, nothing else. Gone now.

Belated thanks for the offer, I had them done by AP Tyres in Rotherham, and highly recommend them.
