Hi everyone, still haven't got a CH-R yet but still looking and wondered where everyone's came from, I ask this for the best  build quality, on doing the research I came across this information, if the VIN starts with 1  4  or 5 it was made in the USA if 2  Canada  if 3 Mexico and if it starts with a J Japan. That being so, I was told the Mexico quality was a bit iffy and that's where the UK get their CH-R's from, I sure Flash will be along soon with some information, but what have you got, and any quality issues, at present I'm looking at a 17/18 CH-R 1.2 petrol Excel 60k miles.

The C-HR was discontinued in the USA in 2022 cars come out of Turkey and Japan and use a different VIN system,

UK/EU cars come from Turkey only most via Autoport, 2016 onwards

I nearly did not click on the thread

From working at a steel plant, were I worked I was producing molten iron, the start of metal making and took pride at what was sent out for steel making, none compliant steel went for tyre cord, quality steel went for other products, does none of the CH-R's use British made Steel.

The CH-R 1.2 petrol stopped production in 2021 so it's models 17 to 21 I'm interested in, they are all Hybrid after that date and I don't want a Hybrid as I have a Hybrid Lexus what I'm selling, I have to assume no one has had any quality issues mainly rust then.

Just on a slight tangent if I may? My Ireland spec' C-HR has the VIN number JTPAAAAA80R03nnnn. Try as I might, I can not find out from t'internet what exactly all the letters and numbers mean. Can somebody in the know enlighten me please?

This may help but seeing that your VIN comes back with errors when using a vin decoder, it may not help 😢.

Although there are exceptions to the rule, the first three digits usually refer to the country of manufacture, the vehicle maker and the vehicle type.

For example, if you check the first letter of the code, you’ll see J references Japan, S references England, while V identifies France. Turkey gets an N, while Thailand and South Africa get an M or an A; this is where most of the new Hilux’s are produced.
On earlier models the second letter is usually T, which describes Toyota, the third describes which group of cars (or sometimes which chassis type) the vehicle sits on.

The next six numbers reference the car’s body style and engine and gearbox, while the remaining eight are combination unique to the car, listing the year the car was made, the factory it was produced in and where it came in the production process.

VIN decoders just don't work for our Toyotas - I believe that they assume the US VIN format which is 'different'.

But this doesn't make sense (to me!). JTP indicates an SUV built by Toyota in Japan. But the Mk2 C-HR is no longer built in Japan - instead it comes from Turkey so its VIN should logically start NMT. It seems even 'differenter' than I would have expected! 🙂

Taken from toyota-tech.eu. the vin number isn't recognised.

Selecting the right manual

There are many hundreds of technical manuals for repair of Toyota and Lexus vehicles. Selecting the correct manual for the vehicle you wish to repair can be confusing. The following information and example will assist in selecting the correct manual.

(1) Identify the Vehicle

image.thumb.png.d7cdc94e6e32da68c2719b8916f61d11.png

Before you can select the right manual, you must accurately identify the vehicle to be repaired by locating the Model Code on the Vehicle Identification Plate. The plate is typically located in the engine compartment but may also be located elsewhere on the vehicle. The illustration shows typical locations for vehicle identity plates on Toyota or Lexus vehicles.

(2) The Model Code

image.thumb.png.89f070089fd9a6e6e228503a673457a3.png

The vehicle identity plate contains the vehicle identity number, engine number and model code. The vehicle Model Code, similar to that shown below provides a complete identification of the vehicle type including model, engine, transmission and body type.

Only the basic model code is required to search for manuals. In this example, ZZT250 provides sufficient information to search for Avensis manuals.

A complete explanation of the model code is provided within the first few pages of each New Car Features manual. These can be viewed on-line by selecting the appropriate model (in this case Avensis) and New Car Features from the Publication Type drop-down lists.

Thanks for the replies @Mark_P and @philip42h . When I was searching the net, all the information seemed to point to the American market. I have confirmed the VIN with the registration document, so it ain't me going daft. I might have a word with the dealer, if and when I remember!

My 2021 CHR was built in Turkey, and is a “delight” to drive!😄

@philip42h mentioned earlier about how my VIN should "logically start" with NMT instead of JTPA. I noticed in the CHR Recall thread, @Louie shows a picture of his invoice which shows his VIN begining with JTPA!  So it looks like both our cars were built in the same place - wherever that was.
