£1800 Quote on Clutch Kit Replacement.

Hi All,

My Auris is my first car so please forgive what might be a stupid question but my local Toyota have just quoted me £1800 to fit a Clutch Replacement kit due to the clutch slipping.

It’s a 64 plate 1.3 Auris, online had me expecting that it might come to about £700 to £1000 so £1800 has been a shock.

Just looking for any advice/ thoughts.

Thanks.

Advise to go to independent mechanic for a quote and see any recommendations from family/friends or reviews online. It would likely be less.

That sounds about right for a dealer, which is why virtually nobody goes to a dealer for work outside of servicing unless they're desperate!

It's a pretty standard job so ask friends and acquaintances for reputable garages who can you can get quotes from. It's worth getting the parts from Toyota, but the labour charges are ridiculous because they do it 'by the book' which takes 3 times as long as how a sane person would do it.

I would expect a good local independent do it for about £500-£750. Clutch kit quality and prices vary, search this site for past members experiences.

About over 10 years ago had a BMW 323 coupe, spend approx £150 for the clutch and another £150 labour from my trusted mechanic.

Added:

Do some research and source a good reasonable brand/quality and ask mechanic for fitting price.

Online sites like car parts for less, gsf etc.

With the clutch and prices you can always do cheaper but you need to take into account the quality of the parts fitted and what exactly is included. Good quality aftermarket as alternative to original Toyota are aceptable but don’t go for cheap unknown brands and the lowest price possible. When getting a quotes ask for the parts brands and what exactly is included. Just to know what are you getting for your money .

Further to what other have said, definitely go to an independent. If you want to ensure high quality parts, ask them to get Blueprint parts, they are just as good as they Toyota Opifit parts that Main Dealers use.

For reference a LUK in north of England at retail on a 1.3 Auris 2014 is £267 that a 3 piece clutch - trade £230 at my place of work

If it's the 1.33 with 6-speed, it should only have a 2-piece kit as it uses a CSC so no release bearing unless you replace the whole CSC (~£90 from Fensport for an italian-made one, £267 from Toyota for an OE one (!!!))

Way I see it; the grabby bits are in 2 pieces (pressure plate and driven plate). Third piece will be either CSC or simple release bearing. Either way, always 3 parts to a proper job 👌I'd  still be inclined to do the CSC even if sold separately as the bulk of the expense is in paying for the opportunity to change it.

Could be that the dealer has priced in a flywheel, which is quite possibility  OTT, unless damage is found after the old clutch removed.

I couldn't find a single kit which included a replacement CSC when I had my Mk2 1.33, which is why I ended up having to buy one separately from Fensport! (I always get the release bearing and slave cylinder changed, and the CSC is both!) Even Toyota's kit only had the 'grabby bits' (ooerr)

If that's changed and they include the CSC now that's a big bonus!

There is a mobile mechanic guy on youtube, quoted me £230? for a 3 piece LUK kit and 500 fitting. I also had some OTT quotes, ended up doing it myself for piece of mind, have look at my posts, got the parts from Mr.T £289

If one has the ability to change a clutch then it's going to save a lot of money. Also would know how to replace many different parts on the car for above general DIY.

I'm at the very basic level 🙂 capable of plugging a tyre, change air/pollen filters, spark plugs, Battery, install HID kit. Once also changed a radiator on the corolla + an alternator on a Micra.

Is 500 not a bit pricey?
