Rear door non-impact emergency open

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have a concern about the rear doors on my Across/RAV4.

The doors all lock with speed or when shifting out of P.  The front doors will open on the handle at any time, but the rear doors require the driver to open their door, or use the unlock button or shift back into P for the rear doors to unlock (unless the manual unlock button is used).  My concern is that this may slow down exit from the rear in an emergency where the driver may not be able to do one of the above - such as driving into deep water (I think in an impact when airbags are deployed all doors will open).  Is there a way to get the rear doors to behave the same as the front passenger door in this respect?

Cheers.

The simplest solution to your concern would be to deselect auto-locking in the first place.

That is an obvious option, however then you have the alternate (potentially greater) risk of someone being able to get in the car from the outside while you are stopped in traffic.

Child lock are not on.  With the child locks on, the doors cannot be opened from inside even if unlocked.

Very true ... but I suspect that those are your only choices ... 😉

Don't the doors all switch to unlocked upon any kind of significant impact? I think this may be a legal requirement.

The manual contains instructions on the different ways to open and close the side doors.

And yet, taken from the manual....
Door unlocking system by impact detection
In the event that the vehicle is subjected to a strong impact, all doors are unlocked.
However, depending on the strength impact or type of accident, the system may not work.
