Anyone successfully connected wireless carplay

Recommended Posts

Posted

Hi. I have a 2022 PHEV and would like to connect wirelessly to CarPlay, instead of using the USB cable. Do I need an adapter and if so has anyone any experience of how good or bad these are? And can recommend any? Thanks.

Interesting. I have never managed to get Andoid Auto to work without a USB cable connection. I attributed that to me being unfamiliar with the Toyota multi media system. That's on a 2023 PHEV.

What does the Multimedia / Navigation Manual for your car say is possible?

If the manual says that it is possible, you should be able to connect wirelessly to ACP following the instructions given. If it is not specified as possible, you may be able to connect wirelessly using an adapter (plugged in to the USB port).

Yes you will need a wired to wireless adapter on the 2022 if the head unit already supports wired carplay.
i use a Carlinkit 2air v5

been using that for a number of years on my 2022 Prius. The latest update (september 2024) is stable and supports the new carplay features released in ios18. See my other post about the Apple intelligence/siri bug pre 18.1 and how to get around it.

Thanks everyone. I will look for the wired to wireless adapter. Currently used cabled but am a bit worried the phone overheats on 4 hour + long journeys , so it’s going to be wireless for me. I will try wirelessly without the adapter first but I don’t have much faith in it working for me.

If your profile is up to date, a 2022 PHEV does not have wireless CarPlay or AA. I believe the newer GRS has wireless CarPlay but not Wireless AA (could have got that the wrong way around, but interestingly the Yaris with the smart connect multimedia has both!). I have this for wireless CarPlay in a 2021 PHEV and it’s been fine. https://amzn.eu/d/hK1fnEn

The carlinkit can be had for under £30 from Ali express. I actually use this wireless kit for the opposite of most ppl, the wired usb port charge very slow 500mah. So charge quick via the 12v port while using wireless Nav.

Anyone using wireless AA adapter on the 2024 infotainment system?

AAWireless is the way to go for Android wireless conectivity with  a RAV4 PHEV 2003.   A bit of a paff to start with but once up and running, it does everything it says on the tin.  Easy fit with Amazon 3M Dual Lock SJ3550, Heavy Duty Reclosable Fastener Tape, Waterproof (5X Stronger Than Classic Hook & Loop Tape) (12.7mm x 1 Meter).  Use tape to position to the side of the phone charging locker and use a small usb cable for connectivity to car.

It works on my RAV4 but no guarantee that it will work on yours!!!!

Good work. Did you mean 2023 RAV PHEV? I'm assuming so as there wasn't one earlier 😂. Which infotainment system are you on? Is it the new 10.5inch display?

Asking because I'm reconsidering wireless AA. But as the temperamental profile loading system is tied to my phone I wasn't sure if it would be a while world of pain.

My OCD was twitching looking at your pic. Could you have put it underneath on the roof of the enclosure? And get right angled connectors on both ends of the USB to help with hiding the cable? Sorry, that's my tidiness OCD 😂

Also, how quick does it start up AA Vs cable? And do you get any extra features over wireless?

Start up is the usual hand shaking that the car wants to do with Toyota, and then with the AAWireless it will only connect if the phone is turned on and unlocked.   There are probably switches in the AAWireless App that can circumnavigate this?

Firstly, make sure that the AAwireless is wirelessly connected to your phone, using the AAWireless app installed on your Android phone.

Then go into the Toyota settings and connect it to Android Auto under the connections menu.  Once that is set, it should connect for ever after.  Except on occaisions whe there might have been a software update on your phone or the firmware update of the AAWireless.

Not every app on your phone has been coded for Android Auto use but a good few are.   It is beyond my knowlegde to be able to list these for you!  I am very happy with my installation of the AAWireless. 🙂

Just remember Moore's law:-  Moore's Law is an empirical relationship and an experience-curve law, which quantifies efficiency gains from production experience. (Thanks AI Overview)

It is the 10.5inch display with only the volume knob!   Time difference between wireless Android Auto and wired Android Auto barely noticeable.  I don't know about extra features between the two connection states as i was so irritated about having to plug the phone in order to leverage Android Auto. I barely used the cable connection.

Mr T should have got his act together regarding Android Auto along with a host of other wizardry that is only available for the North American market and not the UK market.  (Don't get me started!!!)

Amazing car and now have on order the GR version.  🙂

Yes, no problem it's easy to connect. Although there is a small issue that I need to make the connection via bluetooth on my phone each time instead of it connecting automatically. The phone connects auto, but not the carlinkit, think I read it needs to add the connection from the media screen first.

Have also encountered the first disconnection during a long journey a few days ago. Had to unplugged cable from usb port (AA/ACP) and re-plugged.

Had a little time to attempt the adding in wireless carlinkit to auto connect from media screen but no joy. Phones bluetooth auto connect always, the carlinkit I have to manually connect on the phone to make the connection.

If anyone manage to turn on phone's bluetooth and jump in and it auto connect to this AA/ACP device then lmk how.

Turn off bluetooth auto connect setting to car and turn it on for carlinkkit.

also set head unit to use carplay as default connection

give it time to connect, earlier phone models take 10 or so seconds, later ones much shorter.

I just bought one of these as it was on offer for 40 quid as a reduction on top of a reduction and gets good reviews...

Android Auto Wireless Adapter UK with Fast Stable 5Ghz WiFi bluetooth Connection, Wireless Android Auto Adapter Compatible with Android Phones with Android 10+ & Cars from 2016 & USB-A/Type-C, Purple https://amzn.eu/d/glp32SK

Was going to get the Motorola unit but figured I'd start here as it was 30 quid cheaper.

Going to install it at the weekend as I've got a 500 mile round trip tomorrow and don't want any faff or shenanigans.

My main worry is whether I can get enough charge from the charging plate on a long drive as the S24U I got uses a lot of power. If it breaks even that's fine. But if I get to somewhere after a 4.5hr drive and my Battery is now at 50% I'll be switching back to wired 😂. Figured it worth a shot as I've been thinking about it for years.

As I’ve said before I have the Motorola unit, it works well enough but the phone does drop in charge and gets pretty warm. I tend to use it on lower mileage trips and use the wired on longer ones. In particular I’m always keen to arrive at my destination with a full charge. That’s one of the advent of the wired, I’m happy to start a trip with the phone only partially charged.

It’s such a faff and poor that Toyota do not have the facility built into the head unit.

I’m making a change for Android to iPhone in the next few weeks so it will be interesting to see how things look from the other side of the phone market.

Thanks Ernie. Figured I'd try it. See what happens. If it doesn't work out I'll just put it on the shelf. 40 quid trial.

Good luck with the swap to iPhone

Worth a try and being Amazon if it does not work it can be returned.

I've had an Android phone for more years than I can remember the last iPhone being a very early model. However, everything thing else I use is Apple, Mac (Studio), MacBook Pro, iPad Pro etc. so I really want to have the integration that comes with the phone plus I can still use many of my Google apps, importantly WAZE.

If you have most of the Apple ecosystem then it's worth a swap to a recent iPhone. Other than an iPad my wife got free with her work we are all on android here. I prefer the flexibility and customisation over Apple but if you got the ecosystem parts then it makes a lot of sense to go all Apple. And you get better privacy in relative terms.

Off topic - I also like the ease of updating Apple products, literally one click and it's sorted. I still have a windows laptop for some very old software and updating that is a pain in comparison. I have some photo software and there is little doubt that it is biased to the Apple ecosystem products and its processors. Android is also good for updates and like @Nick72 I've used some apps that would never be available on iOS - part of the security/privacy.

Just installed AA wireless.

Pretty slick. No issues. No issues with profile loading.

Wait and see if the charger plate can cope with how much power the phone uses but I figured I'd try it.

Takes a few more seconds to fire up than wired, which was instant previously.

See what bugs come up.

Got this for 40 quid on a double discount offer so if it is a failed experiment it doesn't matter. I tend to game the algorithm on Amazon. Put a thing in your wish list. Leave it. Put an alternative of the same in the wish list. Wait. Get the discount offers. Friend who works on this stuff at Amazon let me into how some of the algos work.

Installed via velcro 3M tape on the underside of an accessory tray. Minimising unsightlyness, but can still see the status light, and yet out of the way.
