HI here, we are racing a 1994 Celica with the 3-SGE Engine (distributor, not coils).  We have just completed a head rebuild, timing belt etc but on its first run after the re-built it is struggling to develop torque at low revs.  Compression is really good in all cylinders.

Off the line the engine just does not pull, even though it is revving fine.  Once it hits 5,000 rpm things start to happen.  We also have a problem with the engine hunting (revs going up nd down by 500).  We have attached all the vacuum pipes, hopefully correctly.

So anyone got any ideas on the low torque?

Re the vacuum pipes, can we just plug any, emissions are not a problem over here.

Any ideas on the hunting?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Just for clarification...

You say you have a 3S-GE engine, but you have GT4 under your profile picture. The GT-Four has the 3S-GTE engine, unless you have removed that and replaced it with a 3S-GE?

Thanks.

I have both, so my question does not relate to the GT4

Okay, so we can forget about turbo problems.

It's just a case of checking everything on the "Troubleshooting" page of the Toyota factory manual as it could be one of many things. Don't rule out bad capacitors in the ECU either, some are failing due to old age.

Thanks for that.  It has new plugs and distributor but we have not changed the plug leads, will do as have them.
