Hi

I just bought an 02 corolla t-sport a fee days ago and the airbag light has come on. I want to know what the problem might be and how much it is to fix it.

Hi,

Depends if you are wanting to sort it yourself or not ?

A common problem seems to be around the airbag or seat belt sensor wiring under the front seats, constant movement and things being pushed under the seat can fracture those wires.

Equally it could be any of the other airbags around the car.  Not always an easy problem for a garage to readily sort out.

On ytube etc there are lots entries about bypassing each 'seat' sensor with a 'resistor plug' to try and identify where the fault is.

However you need to know how to Read out and Reset the current warning light, typically with a OBD2 reader - lots around.

Also playing around with the Airbags/wiring can be very dangerous so you need to take extreme care and disconnect the Battery and then wait several minutes for the airbags backup power to fully drain before doing anything !

There was a recall on the Corolla for the passenger front airbag, worth checking its was needed on yours and has beeen done ?

Needless to say its a Mot fail if not sorted !

Thanks for answering!

Do you know if this recall was issued only in the uk or in all of Europe?

As far as I can remember this was due to the Takata airbags recall which was worldwide and affected cars made by many different manufacturers between about 2002 to 2015.

Hi,

Believe it was a worldwide problem, you should be able to check it either online in your country, similar to our uk link below,  or with just check via your local Toyota dealer who may need both your reg and Vin numbers.

That said, the recall was about faulty airbag inflators that could rupture during deployment. While it will not fix your problem with the airbag light, you should definitely make sure it has been done.
