Hello,

Unfortunately, one of my LED on the instrument panel has stopped working (the left indicator).

It is cheaper to swop out the complete instrument panel from a breakers yard than to locate and fix the LED or resistor which might be the problem.

The new instrument panel I install will have a different mileage than my car. My question is does the instrument panel pick up the mileage from the ECU there the correct mileage will be shown on the odometer opr is it not as simple as that?

Thanks, any help most appreciated.

FWIW - I've not done a gauge cluster swap on an iQ but I'm 90% sure the ODO will stay the same. This information is stored in the ECU, not the display unit. Some cars raise an alert or error to show the mileage may have been tampered with, which then needs to be reset (the flag, not the mileage). Not heard of this happening on Toyotas though.

Thank-you, most helpful.

So I can swop in a new instrument cluster and the correct odometer reading will be read from the ECU?

Where is the ECU in an IQ by the way?

Mileage is stored in the cluster on an EEPROM (93xxx iirc) it is also stored in the ECU independently

you can swap the EEPROM, but at that point just fix the LED

have you checked the 12v on pin 1 (pink) of the 16 pin connector

Hello,

Yes, I have checked the 12v on pin 1 (pink) of the 16 pin connector. It is providing 12v.

I tried dis-attaching and re-attaching the two connectors and fiddling with the wiring looms but this did not fix the problem. Definitely think it is loose connection somewhere.

Please see the video I took showing the intermittent signal to the left indicator LED on the instrument panel.

There are quite few companies in the UK that repair instrument clusters - normally with a 24 hour turnaround.

They list what they claim they can repair, (including dim/ faulty warning lights !)

I'm sure they will give a cost estimate if you want to "shop around" price wise.

Several websites I've seen include, "Cluster repair UK",  as well as many others.

Just out of interest, a company called Autotronics are stating £153 for a Toyota IQ cluster repair - so not cheap !

So it would definitely pay to shop around  - as well as read reviews for them !

If it transpires there is a wiring problem on the car, rather than a instrument cluster fault, it would be worth enquiring price for testing only if it turns out to be "no fault found" on the cluster. One advantage of going down the repair route, would be that the mileage on the repaired odometer reading will be correct.

ignition off and feed the pink wire with 12v, the ground is shared with other items so it will not be the problem - The issue is with the circuit itself

Sorry flash, what are you saying. I'm not following. Are you saying that I should test the pink wire with 12v to see if it lights  correctly.

yes, see if it lights fully rather than an intermittent 12v flash

This problem made me scrap a car against my wishes.  I had a Renault Grand Espace from new and after 14 years the dash LED display was getting dimmer.  The main dealer wanted thousands, but a local bod suggested he could fit a replacement from a donor vehicle for £600.   This was tried but the display would not interface with the ICU.  Apparently, when new they become hard-coded to the vehicle's ECU code and cannot be altered.

This meant that (a) a spare dash is useless.  By the time I found a firm (in France) who could repair my dash and return it to me, the repairer had disposed of it as scrap electronics.  Renault no longer had stock (even if I could have afforded it) and with no speedo or odometer, it would not pass an MoT.  It had to go for scrap with barely 38k on the clock.

The thought of the same thing happening on an iQ makes me want to run for the hills!

Because French...........

Toyota stuff isn't over complex and is very repairable, I only do local repairs as messing with couriers and fragile items isn't fun

Yeah I'm really hoping that sort of thing is made illegal under the various right to repair things that are going on.

Thankfully Toyota don't seem to be showing signs they will head in that direction. There may be some core parts that need coding but you can do it with most mechanic-grade ODB2 tools or Toyota Techstream and they are few and far between.

OTOH I'd not go near anything by french or german marques as a lot of them have gone full ham on that - Even the 12v Battery is serialized on a lot of german cars now, and if you don't get the replacement coded in, the car runs in a crippled state! It's ridiculous and I hate it.

It's also why I avoid Apple products like the plague, as they've serialized nearly every component in their products; You can't even e.g. swap the camera from one brand new phone to another because they've locked it all down so much.

French and Germans love coding and locking stuff down, some merc's and BMW's have 100+ modules with fibre optic networks it's nightmare stuff

You have 2 option that I can see,

1. replace with another speedo from scrap car and have mileage corrected.

2. Try getting speedo fixed.

Try this guy, you can post it to him and he will fix and return.

Tell him Maz from Edinburgh recommended you.

Hello,

Many thanks. I agree, I have two choices to get the LED fixed. It seems sensible to try and get the LED fixed first and not change the instrument panel.
