Aftermarket Boost Guage

now we all know that our standard boost guage is pap, and that peeps recommend getting a good aftermarket guage when tweaking the boost.

however just a thought - WHY BOTHER?

if u set ur boost at say 15psi, and set ur fuel cut for 16psi, then why does it matter if your guage is reading true figures or not as the fuel cut will presumably defend the engine from any potential overboost (which to be fair could happen with standard boost anyway).

do peeps recommend this purely as good practice - or am i missing something that may be vital with a new guage - ie a pipe or something?

I guess if the FCD is doing it's job properly and the boost is set to 15PSI, then really and truly, you could get away with having a ANY boost guage.

I still like having one tho

That will only assume that you will not be boosting above the limit of about 15psi... it won't give you tell tale signs of wastegate creep, dropping boost, boost levels through the gears and so on and so forth. It's nice to see what's happening all the time. Gauges give you a good indication that everyhting's OK... or not!

How do you know you've set your boost valve to 15psi if you haven't got a boost guage?? :hokus-pokus:

Errr.... good point.

Can't believe I was so dumb.

if ur boost is set up with say a unichip or boost controller.

just driven an import wrx impreza (friend just got it), and that hasnt even got a stock guage! which further adds to my arguement.

slower than my tubby too :D

I'm sure you could fly a plane without gauges... but it might be nicer to know what's going on!!!:lol:
