Avensis D4d crank no start

Hi, I have a 2011 Avensis D4D that died on me, it just lost all power and stopped running lots of smoke out the exhaust then just cranks and no start, I have replaced the fuel sender unit under the rear seat and upon advice from a mechanic who had a look at it suggested it was the high prey fuel pump under the bonnet. So I purchased a known working one from eBay and fitted it myself but still have the same problem. I have plugged in an OBD2 reader and have no codes. 
the high pressure fuel pump has a 3d bar code on it does it need to be coded to the ECU??

any help and advice most welcome
