I can't get my iPhone 13 to work with my new 74 reg Yaris HEV.

I can connect it with bluetooth and use it to play music and my iPhone calls but when I use the option for CarPlay

See attached pictures,  Pic1.. is when my phone is connected to just median and phone.pic1.thumb.jpeg.acfb691818951f6aa6c3a0b55b8e7c78.jpeg

pic2.thumb.jpeg.f727dafc76ebd796fdb10885e450cd8d.jpegpic3.thumb.jpeg.500cd594afd4fbbc3a615f9dd572c57a.jpeg

Pic2...is when I select the CarPlay option and Pic3 is the error and a few moments later it says the status of my I phone

is disconnected.

Before I  go back to the dealer I was wondering if this is a known problem.

Try to rename your phone to something shorter. There have been issues with phone names containing special characters and multiple spaces for other services.

have you tried all the obvious things first.

1) remove any devices from the car that are link to your account on the car

2) rebooted the iPhone

Also what version of iOS are you on

Also is your phone WiFi turned on as this is what it uses for car play instead of Bluetooth

Same here! Save yourself a lot of hassle and just get in touch with your dealer.

We picked up new Yaris Cross at beginning of June - CarPlay working as we left showroom. Two weeks later en route to Cornwall, stopped off at services and CarPlay wouldn't engage. I'm not an IT novice so was able to trouble shoot all the usual things - some already mentioned here - also pairing and unpairing etc. After a month of intermittent success I got fed up, contacted my dealer and they asked me in to do all the things I'd already done and promised to contact Toyota. Three weeks later I asked for an update and listened to typical dealer waffle (translated meaning: we hoped you would just go away and plug your phone in). Invited back in for them to test and came to same conclusion - it's the bluetooth Connection!! Or lack thereof.

I am due in early next week for firmware/software update which I hope will enable me to get connected. I'll let you know!

Don't be fobbed off - if it doesn't work - take it in and get it sorted!

Regards

Just a question Hotchef if it is a firmware/software fix, just wondering why its not been pushed out OTA. Would be curious to know from your dealer.

Good question, Marvin. Hopefully by Monday tea time I will be able to report back with a positive outcome. Have a nice weekend.

I'm not sure this OTA updating thing is working so well just now...

Probably an Apple IOS 18 issue.

There are reports in other tech forums that there is a bluetooth connection issues with the new IOS 18. People are experiencing random disconnections.

One solution is to switch off a new bluetooth feature.

Settings > Accessibility > Vocal Shortcuts, turn it off.

May have to wait until Apple fix their problem.

Not true. Ios 18 works ok. Some bugs in 18.01 fixed in 18.1 released monday or earlier if you download public beta today.

Ah, so it was true and Apple have just released a fix. I track use of .medical tech that relies on functional bluetooth. The issue was causing havoc with medical devices for the past month

Remedy now is to test Apple fix by applying update and restarting phone.  Hopefully service will be restored.

I’ve had IOS18 since the day it was released with no problems at all either with my car or my medical device.

You are all assuming the user has iOS 18 as they have not specified. Since it's an iPhone 13 that does not guarantee it is iOS 18, which is why I did ask.

MardyMartin, you are right. I misread iPhone 13 as iPhone with IOS 18. The small screen I was using is my excuse.  Still worth a check

Don't think it's iOS 18 - my iPhone 12 plays perfectly well with all other bluetooth connections/equipment. Tried Mrs Hotchef's iPhone 13 - no luck. It all started with last iOS (17). When I went in last week, technicians tried system with more up to date models unsuccessfully.

As I said earlier, I'll report back when "update" complete.

I think that if bluetooth on the car is in operation, some phone functions won't work as the car has grabbed the bluetooth for its phone operations. Got a pop-up to that effect.  Maybe carplay is affected?

I have a YC Premier, don't connect the phone via bluetooth, just wireless and CarPlay is fine.  Iphone 16 Pro with iOS18. My Bluetooth blood monitor is working fine.

Ios 18 is available for models back to the Xr so a 13 can upgrade to it

CarPlay uses bluetooth to detect and then set up the connection between the phone and the car and then it switches to use the WiFi for the actually functionality.

I have iPhone 13 Pro and just updated to iOS 17.7 this morning so ios18 can’t be the problem.

Interesting, I only use CarPlay not phone… so I just this second tried to connect the phone as a phone and it says Apple CarPlay will be disabled if you enable phone!

not an issue to me per se as WhatsApp and messaging etc work as part of CarPlay.

screen shot below.

However when you look at CarPlay it already has your phone in it, ergo I think the phone setting is for older bricks/potatoes without CarPlay.

id suggest deselecting the top 2 (phone and media) and then selecting CarPlay, everything should then work from within CarPlay…

Yep, that was what I was trying to say - but you did it better! 🤣

Dear all - my Yaris Cross went in this morning for the software upgrade. Picked up this afternoon and CarPlay now working as it should, through the bluetooth connection. It was tested with a couple of iPhones before I got there and then my iPhone 12 connected without issue.

The update was downloaded through the USB port. I asked whether subsequent  updates could be downloaded ("over the air") by myself but apparently whilst possible, the process is more successful the way carried out today?! The software numbers can be seen on the multimedia screen under settings - so I suppose I will have to make a note of these and then if I get any more issues I can check with Toyota as to whether there is an update available.

I know I can always use a wired connection to run CarPlay, but I prefer a wireless set up and as it comes as part of the overall package - well it should just work!

I hope whipitonce get their's sorted in due course.

Question. Does anyone remember transferring their favourite head unit / amp / cd/md autochanger between cars when you bought a new one?

Toyota implementation of tech has in my opinion in the last 10 years been sketchy to say the least. Across all models. Missing the boat on timings, poor implementation of standard products and a complete partnership failure for the “on board hotspot” implementation during the post Brexit years.
(I have a unit in my Prius that I cant even configure now as Toyota have withdrawn support for it since their partner was Orange-no longer trading as Hutchinson telecom in the uk).

So… what to do when and if i upgrade my gen4 prius?

My solution… I will take my wired to wireless carplay adapter and plug it into the new car, thus I’m not dependant on Toyota Media Techs actually knowing what they are doing.
This i tested on my recent test drive of the gen5 and it worked out of the box.

My work colleague would; He liked to boast of this super Pioneer unit he had across 4 cars (Several Vauxhalls and a Honda?) until he got an Audio with an integrated unit.

I've never had the pleasure alas - All the cars I've owned have had integrated units so you couldn't change the headunit even if you wanted to (Not without some major fettling anyway!)

I do feel that's a bit of a shame as I like the idea of picking my own infotainment system, but since half the car functions are controlled through them now, the age of the aftermarket radio is pretty much gone...
