Spacesaver wheel for Yaris AWD Cross with 20" 5 stud wheels

I have searched through the forum but cannot find this topic raised before - apologies if I'm wrong.

I think I know the answer but wanted other views. I can see a spacesaver wheel will not fit under the boot floor because of the AWD and other gubbins under there, and can live with that.  However, the online advice seems to be that with the AWD car, using an under-diameter wheel even temporarily, could damage the AWD transmission. So if we want a spare wheel, it will have to be a full size one.

This is a 2022 car.

Any views please?

Well if a space saver won't fit, where will you put a full size spare?

Generally, a spare wheel can be up to 10% difference in size so for a 17" wheel fitted to the car a 16" wheel would be OK (10% of 17 = 1.7 so a 16" wheel would be ok but a 15" would not)

However - I don't know for an AWD - so if you've read only full size would work then I would recommend that you stick to that advice.  As @FROSTYBALLS said, where were you going to store it?

Another thought - you can get tyre liquid that you put in the tyre permanently and if a leak occurs, it will seal the leak and leave a coloured mark where it sealed.  I've used this in the past on a SmartCar that only had emergency fix, the same as the Yaris gunk, and my partner didn't like the thought of it.

Literally doesn't matter - The reasoning is having one wheel turning at a different speed will stress all the differentials (And you must ESPECIALLY never use one with all the diff-locks on!)

However the Yaris Cross doesn't have diff locks and isn't a 'normal' AWD, in the sense it has no trans-axle tying the front and rear wheels together.

It's more like a 2x2WD - The front and rear are independently driven so a slight difference in wheel size on one wheel won't really make any difference to it - As with all space-saver or smaller spares, as long as you don't do anything stupid like drive at 70mph for 500 mile, and instead drive slowly and minimise the time it's on (i.e. get to a tyre shop ASAP!) then it'll be fine and nothing will be damaged.

20" on a YC? 16, 17 and 18" are factory standard

OEM space saver is 17" with a tyre of the same rolling radius

Any space saver on any car it’s not recommended to use on driving wheels. Even at same overall diameter the space saver tyre has totally different width and tread pattern which will add unnecessary load to the differential and highly recommended not to drive long miles with these.
If any of these were fitted to the driving axle then just use to get the car to a nearest place where you can fit a correct tyre and wheel.
Yaris cross  does not come with 20” as factory fitted and as mentioned it is not a proper awd car. Anything that is ok for fwd will be ok for you too, just don’t drive extended time with space saver if you care about your differential/ transmission.

Thnks guys, helpful replies. I realise I checked the wheel diameter wrongly and it is in fact 18". Where will the spare go? -  in a cover in the boot, which is an acceptable loss of luggage space for the two of us (though not for a family of five).

Cheers.

It goes in the spare wheel well with a different insert
