Hi everyone the 2018 CHR excel 1.2 petrol has arrived and it's a gem, but I have a stupid question already, this stupid parking brake. Never had an electric PB before but I get the jist of the brake hold but can't quite get my head around the PB. I tried to press the button to release the PB but it only seems to want to do it automatically when I let the clutch go and accelerate, and the car would budge in reverse until I'd put the seat belt on, I like to reverse around in the drive at home before fastening the belt to drive off, or am I missing something.

I find them annoying; Theoretically they should be analogous to a real handbrake (i.e. push to release, pull to engage, just smaller and harder to use without looking).

However there are more safety interlocks that sometimes stop it working; A common one is you need to be holding the brake pedal before trying to release it or it just won't.

(In fact I find in my hybrid there are a lot of operations that require the brake pedal to be held before they will work  . It's a very different mindset from an old manual car, where you can generally do whatever you like (But if you break it you get to keep both pieces as the saying goes!))

Ah, that maybe why the brake wouldn't release while trying to reverse without buckling up, I thought it would just be a pull to operate and push down to disengage.

I will caveat that to say I'm just guessing - In mine I linked the EPB to the gear selector so it engages when I put the car in Park and disengages when I take it out, and haven't actually touched the EPB switch since

As yours is apparently a manual I have no real idea how it behaves...!
