Speedometer and Odometer not working

First of all hello to everyone I am a new member on the forum. 🖐

I have a 1993 Toyota Corolla 1.6l. Approximately 1 year ago the speedometer and Odometer stopped working. I have tried replacing the speed sensor using a part I found on eBay and this didn't fix the issue. I took the car to a local mechanic who tested the spare speed sensor and said it was ok - he also tested the instrument cluster and thinks that this is the issue. However I cannot seem to find the part on eBay as they have different connections and mine has the model E40 marked near the bottom of the display. The other gauges on the cluster still work such as the rev counter, fuel gauge.

I have looked on the internet at other possible causes and these could be a blown fuse or bad engine control unit - I have no idea how to go about tackling these can anyone advise please?

Hi,

Cannot help directly with your problem though if you can find any online circuit diagrams of your instrument cluster it might show any such fuses ?  though expect they are "onboard" so you would probably have  to strip things down to the bare circuit board.

There are a good few companies out there who specialise in doing such electronic repairs so might be worth searching from them and getting a quote.

Just search on  " car instrument cluster repairs uk "

Hi Oldcodger,

Thanks I will give that a go. There is an auto electrician nearby but as soon as I mentioned the problem they didn't want to look at it unfortunately. I can even remove the instrument cluster myself but once I do this the ignition is disabled and I can't start it so I am unable to take it to a garage miles away.

Cheers,

Martin

Yeah it's a bit of a pain; Most normal auto electricians deal with wiring and don't do board-level repairs.

You need a company like BBA Reman (Now RemanX) as featured on Wheeler Dealers, but they usually require you to send the part to them which may not be viable.

That said, on WD they drove the part there and fixed it live so maybe they are willing to do that for normal people too...?

Hi Cyker, I have heard of Reman as my motorbike mechanic heard about my problem and gave me one of their old brochures. I found that they were wound up around the lockdown and I wasn't sure if their successor Remanx was a good alternative and didn't fancy sending it through the post to a newly established company - also Rochester is too far for me to travel as I'm based in Liverpool.

I will contact them as a last resort if all else fails though.
