I have been having a few issues with USB memory sticks with my 67 plate Rav4.

I spoke to my local Toyota dealer service department who advised that the media centre can cope with USB sticks up to 64GB, however I am finding that if the stick contains more than about 1.4GB of data it will not read correctly.

Can anyone advise what the max size really is ?

USB drives must be formatted as FAT32. The Windows upper limit on size is 32GB (but that is not the FAT32 limit).

Map updates are of the order of 16GB so the actual data limit must be in excess of that.

But I suspect that you are really seeking an answer in relation to media files? In which case the limit is based on file structure, number of files and the Touch 2 systems ability to index the file structure.

Start by checking the media system manual for your car ... 😉

I have my media on a 4GB stick which worked perfectly happily on my Touch2 system.

You also need to format a new memory stick before you use it.

Some of them contain protection, which isn't needed.

I have used a number of sticks - all FAT32 formatted - the media centre will read them all but if there is more than about 1.4Gb of data the indexing gets corrupt, when I check them with my PC they are not corrupt and chkdsk gives no errors.

I have reviewed the Navigation and Multimedia system owner's manual but this gives no guidance regarding size or frankly any technical details.

How many files are in 1.4Gb of data?

Not sure how many files but certainly less than 100

RTFM ... 😉

The information you are looking for is one pages 73 - 75 of your media system manual. Specifically:

Thank you - I had not found this page.

The problem remains that I am nowhere near these upper limits when the indexing gets corrupt.  So I wonder if the unit itself is being the problem.

I think it will be a file format issue or too high a bit rate

also the units only allow for a certain folder structure/depth for play lists

The file format is okay as it does read, but I am unsure of the bit rate this may have been set too high but the media centre does play the files if they total less than 1.4GB

Mine is a 4GB drive holding 3.3GB data in 600 files across 60 folders - and that works fine. I'm sure others have larger music collections etc.. So, there isn't a 1.4GB limit ... it must be something else ... 🤞

The folder structure needs to be relatively simple - mine is <artist> / <album> / <tracks> - nothing deeper than two levels of folder. I'd be surprised if yours is any more complex ...

So, I'd be looking next for a file or folder naming issue - i.e. a name that is either too long or contains characters that the media system doesn't like ... ?

depending on the file size, 1.4 GB could contain anywhere from 14 large files to over 100,000 small files.👍

Try copying over 50 of the 100 files and see if it works if so copy another 20 until you have copied all 100 testing each time to see if it works. It only needs one corrupt file to screw the indexing. Or alternatively copy 100 different files and see if that works

op states circa 100 files so 14mb ish per

it must be something in the file structure or unsupported file type in the structure

Edit. Is the stick windows fat32 format, there are known issues with fat32 on the mac and some Linux distros and the way QNX handles them

Okay I have spent a number of days testing, I have tried various rip formats on several different USB sticks - all new, correctly formated and dskchked to ensure that there are no issues and I am getting the same result.

If I go above 1.3Gb ( number of files / tracks does not have an effect as different rip formats have differing size files for the same track) the media centre does not read the USB correctly and can not index it, if I switch the stick to my lap top everything is okay.

I will contact the dealer as the car is still under warranty and see what they say..........

Can you take one known working file and make multiple copies beyond 1.3GB?

This will eliminate any issues with file format first.

I have 5 different rip formats available (AAC, MP3, WMA, FLAC and ALAC) some with various bit rate. They all give the same effective result that over 1.3/1.4Gb it is not indexing correctly.

I will give the service team a call tomorrow.
