Hi i've just realised I've been a member on here for 6 years, but haven't posted much. In that time we've had an Aygo and a Yaris, and time's flown by with very little to post about.

I do hope to contribute more to this forum though, now I'm a confirmed Toyota fan.

Any, the subject of this thread, the Nextbase 38OGWX Dashcam kit.

We, (well,my wife), recently ordered a new Yaris from the local Toyota dealer, Icon spec, with no optional extras.

Yesterday, she collected the car and noticed it had the Dashcam fitted. She assumed it was standard, but as far as I'm aware it's a £295 option. It was never offered to us, or even discussed. As far as I can tell we haven't been charged for it.

I think my wife will phone them to ask, but in the meantime, any ideas why they fitted it? Could they have just fitted it to our car by mistake, or is a new policy to fit them as standard. Unlikely I would have thought?

I connected to the camera last night, and it seem to be working fine. My wife did complain the car beeped at her for doing 31 mph in a 30 zone on the way but the video showed she doing 34mph. Ha ha, busted!

I’m impressed that you managed to get it for free! I paid £350 for both the front and rear dash cams, and I thought I was getting a great deal by getting £50 off! By the way, do you have the rear one too?

Probably the Intelligent Speed Assistance which is a mandatory fitment on all new cars now.

Yeah, it is annoying when there is absolutely no allowance for speedo inaccuracy - 30mph in my Yaris Cross is 28 according to the GPS, so a 2mph allowance before the beep would be better - with a bumpy road its almost impossible to keep at steady 30mph without going up 1mph after a pothole.

If I don’t want to hear the beep I use the speed limiter function. Which is ok until it gets the actual limit wrong!

I just turn the speed warning (due to the fact that a 3.5mile stretch of road near me is a 60 limit and the ISA gives me 4 different speed limits for that strech, there are no signs/side roads with other limits) and the lanes assist off at the start of each journey.

Yes, we have the rear camera too. Getting stuff free from a dealer is good, but there's never been any mention of the camera in our dealings.

As nice as they are, they have got a few things wrong when it comes to communication, so it wouldn't surprise me if some other customer is currently kicking up a stink over their missing cameras.

Our old Yaris (2021) does often pick up incorrect speed limit signs, from a side road usually. It doesn't bleep so I'm assuming I disabled it. Instead the symbol goes solid red when exceeding the limit.

I think that is your answer...they have fitted it to the wrong customers car but it's a win win for you.

Dash cams fitment likely to be a mistake by them, they will be looking to take it off if you got in touch regarding it.

Cars from 2024 I find the speed limit bleeping annoying, prior to this year, can be set to visual alert like your 2021.

They’ll probably let you keep it or try and get you to pay for it at a reduced cost, it’s too much hassle for them to remove it especially if you say you’ll drop it off but need a courtesy car,

When I ordered my car I discovered through conversation with a staff-member that they ‘fitted dashcams to all their cars’ unless the customer didn’t want it.

Hmmmm….. I hadn’t asked for one, and when I said I didn’t need the camera the price of the vehicle reduced by £300.

We didn’t fail out over it; the dealership felt they were being helpful by including it, I didn’t agree - we left it at that.

That's not being helpful by that dealer, it's not clear and honest. The sales guy at the dealership where I bought my car said they have special offer of £300 for dash cams, I politely declined. Can DIY myself better quality for less, I know not everyone can or want to DIY.

the advantage of a dealer fit Dashcam on a new/approved used is that should a problem arise there is never any issue with who is at fault ...

But, yes, it does limit choice & may not be the cheapest option available.

You see how dealers are up selling unnecessary accessories secretly charging £300 but never mentioned that adding extra power consumables to already poor 12v supply will cause you starting issues and headaches. Dealers profits over customer satisfaction. If the cameras were so important for safety purposes it would be already an mandatory thing and all new cars would have had them fitted in factories as many already had , probably Toyota will follow.

The dealer fitted Nextbase dash cam has a user replaceable rechargeable Battery pack fitted inside the front camera to power the parking mode function.

Once the vehicle ignition is switched off the dash cam isn't drawing any power from the vehicles 12 volt supply so no drain on it.

As for mandatory, only certain DS & high end Citroen vehicles have had them built in to the vehicle as a trial & that hasn't really been a success.

All the display vehicles at my local dealership have them fitted and they aren't removed when sold. Is it possible it has been in a showroom? Alternatively, as suggested, it may have been added to the list price or someone else is missing one!

Toyota dealers favour the Nextbase 380W Dashcam, not sure why, as its only 1080p quality.  These are £249 direct from Nextabse, so if Toyota are offering to supply and fit for £300, that's not a bad price and as already mentioned, if you do have a issue, it was them that fitted it.  And if you are going to get them to fit it, I'd strongly suggest getting the rear camera that accompanies the front one.  These can be powered with the Nextbase ODB plug in power supply, which can simply be unplugged should you think you have a problem.  If get it hardwired into the system, this can't be done so easily.

Toyota stipulates the GW380 as the recommended dealer fit so they don’t have a choice on the camera they fit.

It’s quite easy to disconnect just unplug it from the camera end. Or the piggyback fuse under the glovebox

I mentioned the ODB port disconnection option, because when you unplug it using that method, there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING that Toyota could use as a possible future issue.  If you hardwire it, then that can be used as a possible cause to a possible issue, we all know what dealers are like !! People have also mentioned that hardwiring a Dashcam can be classed as a modification by insurance companies.

That’s the biggest advantage of having a Toyota approved camera fitted.

Although not the best but it does the job.

Also remember to declare it to your insurer as a modification, so that they would cover the extra cost of a replacement if your car was stolen.

They might even give you a discount!

Nextbase's dashcams are very middle of the road but they seem to have reached out to a lot of insurance and car manufacturers to offer them deals as they seem to have a near monopoly on the dealer-fit Dashcam market.

Also, last time I looked most insurers only offered a discount on certain models of Dashcam and the vast majority of them were Nextbase. (This seems to have reduced though, as it seems like most insurance companies don't offer discounts any more just for having a Dashcam, or even have a list of approved ones, for some reason)

Most just seem to note it if you declare it, but that's it.

Nextbase's after-sales support supposedly has improved a lot and I think you can download PDF manuals from their website, but there's not much to it TBH...

They are mostly set-and-forget; Only time I touch mine is to pull the microSD card to dump footage or update the firmware
