Hello all,

time to change DPF as the DPF is completely clogged it seems. The car starts and runs for a few seconds and the bogs down. Loosening the EGR allows the car run as exhaust gets through from there. EGR doesn't seem to be clogged as I removed this earlier and it's not full of soot and the valve moves as well. Also even if the EGR would be faulty it wouldn't cause the car not to run, correct?

Where's the DPF located at and how labor intensive it is to remove it? Is it between the engine and firewall? I've tried to search almost all of the internet but can't find a picture / information about the exact location of the DPF.

Why do you think it's the DPF? Normally a clogged DPF will throw a code. Are you sure yours even has a DPF, as I thought only the 2010 ones onwards had DPFs...?

If the problem you're having is the engine doesn't idle stably and keeps revving up and down, it's more likely the opening from the turbo throttlebody to the EGR that has blocked - It's a common issue on Mk1 D4Ds that don't see much motorway mileage, but I've not heard of it so much on a Mk2.

I had to clean it out with both my Mk1s (Brake cleaner is magic for cleaning carbon deposits) - It was so perfectly blocked it didn't even look like there was an opening there until we soaked it in a bowl of brake cleaner for a bit and poked some out with a screwdriver.

mid to late 2008 is when the 1.4 got its dpf but it can be a bit hit and miss for 2009 cars

the cat comes straight after the turbo the DPF is connected to it, with 2 metal pipes coming off it for the differential pressure sensor

what you are describing is a blocked exhaust (not dpf), failed cat or a failed turbo - can you feel the exhaust at the backbox) unbolt the exhaust mid-section after the dpf or cat - start the car and see if it runs

Standard cat on the left, DPF on the right

OP is not in the UK, so will have a different spec

Hi Flash,

thanks for the reply.

Exhaust is very weak coming out of the tailpipe and hence I thought it would be fully clogged DPF but obviously it can be one of the problems you mentioned.

I will try to unbolt the mid section of the exhaust and see what happens. Of course this would be a much more "preferred" problem to have than the DPF issue.

I thought of making a DPF delete as well and read that I need KTAG for this. Does anyone know how to remove the DPF from the ECU with KTAG? If that is the issue and not a blocked exhaust.

Does this work? https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006755320265.html

Removing the DPF would make the car illegal to use on the road. It would also fail any MOT.

From your insurers viewpoint it would also be considered a modification and should you be involved in an accident and failed to notify them you would probably find them refusing to pay for the accident.

Fix it properly or scrap it.

Could be way off here but in case it helps - I've seen it in an older diesel before where the baffles in the exhaust were so rotted they had basically filled the exhaust and were effectively choking the car...exhaust changed and car was back to normal.

given the age and symptoms, that is why I suggested unbolting the mid-pipe and starting the car, that will tell if/where it is blocked, inspection and testing are better than firing the parts cannon at it

typically a blocked DPF will throw a code when it detects an issue with  differential pressure in the DPF, there is a possibility the cat has broken up blocking the exhaust

First of all thanks to all for the tips, really appreciate it.

Update to the situation: the car works and runs ok w/o any fault codes.

Went to a "cheap" mechanic and the issue was clogged DPF. And the best part is that I didn't even have to buy a new or reconditioned DPF. We unbolted the exhaust as advised above and the car did not run, however the car ran with EGR bolts loosened, so the issue was DPF.

We used Kent DPF cleaner, and to be honest I never believed this would work - but it did. We took the oxygen sensor out and sprayed DPF cleaner in - and it poured over instantly. The DPF was really full of soot but with patience we managed to put the whole bottle in -> waited for around half an hour and started the car and let it run on idle and left the car running for a while and it started to run better and better. Loads of whitish smoke though as expected 🙂

Then he started force regen and I ran the car for about 30mins around 2k rpm and about 80 km/h and CEL was still on even though we tried to reset it. Got back, took Battery cable out for 2mins (as per AutoCom instructions), Battery cable back -> CEL still on, used AutoCom to reset the faults and voila the car runs as it should.

How long it will run remains to be seen? But so far so good and the cost wasn't too bad IMHO. Paid 180€ for the job.

Thanks for the update, usually a DPF will throw a code long before it clogs

if it hasn't been done, change the diesel filter, a fuel system cleaner wouldn't hurt either

A good piece of advice. Car has very high mileage (+400k km's / ~250k miles) and I have no idea when these have been changed. I changed oil when I bought the car just to be on the safe side and should have done the above on the same go.

This car has been a very good cheap long distance hauler and I have zero regrets buying this car. Very hard to beat Yaris D4D in bang for the buck what you get. They're not flawless, but for a car in its price-range its really a really hard car to beat.
