USB Port For Audio Playback Question

If I understand the manual correctly, I can plug either a thumb drive containing mp3 files or a mp3 player into the type C USB port on the car.  Is that correct?

I don't think you can plug a player in unless the player can present itself as a thumb drive (which most generic ones probably do). That would mean there'd be no advantage over just using a cheaper thumb drive.

My experience of the '19 infotainment unit and USB devices was lack lustre. It took absolutely ages to scan a device if there was a large number of files and then the only options seemed to be totally random play or start from 'A' and work toward 'Z'. Any time the Battery was disconnected (eg; for a service) or i swapped out the stick  the unit would forget where it was and start again after a lengthy rescan.

These days I stream from my phone using bluetooth. That way I get the benefits of a decent music player. It also means I have a seamless experience between listening in my car and listening on ear buds.

Edit: Sounds like later models might have been improved. From a bit of research it seems there might now be a standard for a music player to present itself over USB. Now you just need a device that implements it 🙂

I have a Oct 2023 Corolla Hatch, I have music albums on a USB memory stick / flash drive.

I plug it in using the USB C socket via a USB C / B adaptor bought from eBay. Plays music a treat and very easy to use via the source icon on the screen.

No issues using an iPod touch or phone for audio
