Yesterday I was backing out of my driveway. I got to the side of the road and could see a car coming along so stopped and waited for it to pass.

The minute it was past I lifted my foot off the brake to reverse on to the road and instead of moving, the car slammed on the brakes and had a hissy fit, red lights flashing loud beeps etc.....

Although I was absolutely sure there was nothing behind me, for a second I thought maybe I'd not seen a dog or a bin or something low down, but no, nothing there.

Would the sensor still have the tail end of the passing car in its sights and done this?

I got quite a fright and I'm seriously thinking of switching all the "assistance" warnings off.

It might have been that my neighbour's car was parked on the road too close to the entrance of the driveway?

The beeping is seriously annoying also when people walk behind/in front of your car when you're parked somewhere and getting ready to move.

I mean, if you don't check for these things, surely you shouldn't be driving???

Has anyone else switched off the warnings?

Hi Susan,

My Excel does the same, you just have to get used to allowing the passing car to get a bit further up the road before reversing. Annoying at times, but can be helpful when you are parked between two SUVs.

I find it useful it’s saved me a few times when reversing out of a parking space with the massive c pillar blind spot. I find it most annoying when you are trying to reverse into a bay and there’s another car queuing behind you sometimes it won’t let you move even if there’s plenty of space.
If you turn it off you get a constant warning light telling you it’s off.

Could have been the neighbour's car but IME the computer is a bit slow. Sometimes the parking sensors beep only *after* a close passing car has driven by. As recommended above, just wait a little longer.

It's only happened once and the sound was so loud, I thought I had hit something as I reversed into the drive to turn around in our narrow street; I must have got close to the hedge as there was nothing else near.  Quite a shock!  I had been meaning to test it by driving up to the garage door and seeing what would happen, but chickened out 😂🤣

In our works car park there are large weeds growing around the edges and if you happen to be reversing up to one of them it makes an impressive noise as the car lurches to a sudden stop! When you look along the line of parked cars you can easily see mine as it’s usually stuck out a foot further than the rest 🤣

Just happened to me in the car park at the village hall - looked like I was a Range Rover and decided to park wherever I liked between the lines - sides were OK but waaaay out front!

My corolla did similar second time I drove it...reversing out of fairly open car park, good visibility. Was thinking "I'll turn the that off" when it started beeping. Then I saw the dark grey Audi emerging from the gloomy day. So nope, I won't be turning mine off. My OH feels same with her Yaris premier.

Not everyone's cup of tea, but the driver assistance is a safety net for me, including speed warnings etc.

When you view it on the cameras it seems there’s a second or so delay once something has past before the yellow warning lines disappear, perhaps you were a little quicker in recognising the car had cleared before the system did?

It's a narrow street so I knew there would be no cars coming up from the direction the car was going, so wanted to get out quickly as otherwise I wouldn't be able to see anything for the neighbour's parked-too-close-pile-of-junk-suv. That probably doesn't make sense but I can see how it happened.

I ask you, what is the point of SUVs?

I got a receipt from the self-service petrol pump yesterday and was about to add it to my accounts when I saw it was for £55!  Obviously for the previous car.  Imagine getting that bill every time you fill up!
