Hi Forum

My brother has a '56 plate 1.4 D4D Yaris and the rear subframe has failed

Q. Is it a job you can do yourself on the drive

Q. If doing it yourself what are the awkward bits ...... what else may break when replacing the subframe

Q. Are there any suggestions on where to obtain a rear sub frame

Any feedback would be appreciated as it advances our knowledge

Some of the details on the car:

Model: Yaris - Year: 56 - 2006/7 - Fuel: Diesel - Engine: 1.4 D4D - Rear Brakes: Drums - ABS: Yes

Thanks

When you say failed, do you mean that rust has made it fail?

Hi - Failure in this case means that a couple of cracks have appeared in the sub frame and this is causing the wheels to appear to toe-out there is also creaking when the wheels are 'wiggled'

The axles rust out on those so before you spend out on it, raise the car up on the rear and check that the body it all bolts onto is sound and not rusted out as well. They do rust quite badly depending on the road conditions they are used in. A friend of mine has a 2008 yaris gone for scrap because of rust so check it carefully

Im in Ireland and the car im talking being scrapped was originally from the UK so salt on the roads is an issue

Good to know..... I'll pass that on - If he gets it into a garage to do it that could be a nasty surprise if he hasn't checked before hand - Thanks for the tip

My pal did repair the patch shown up on the MOT but failed again as the metal surrounding the repair wasnt strong enough. Welding rust by a garage will be time comsuming and expensive so check it yourself beforehand. Its labour intensive work.

Stu. I have just sold my 2008 Mercedes C Class which had a failed rear sub frame and the work was carried our by Mercedes (£3,000) under their long term warranty, Its a massive job to do and would advise you do your homework on costs and availability (2008) is old, talk to Toyota and see what they say. Good luck with it

My sons 61 yaris had it's MOT last month and they told him his suspension arm is  corroded  not weakened. Both sides

And suspension mount corroded  not weakened on the back

The owner before him lived in Weston-super-Mare. Sea air they said when I asked . .

We changed his brake calipers few months ago  due to rust .

I thought jap cars was good against rust ??

We once bought a Yaris from Bridlington, the MOT station said it was rustiest car he had ever come across, needless to say I have never bought a car from a coastal area since, I always do a registration check on first registration area first two letters and if more than one owner where they lived, it's a safe bet if the first two letters are YY

Bit of a myth. Roads in Japan aren't usually gritted/salted so cars there don't suffer as much.

So a misunderstanding (from decades ago) becomes a reputation ... And most of our 'Japanese' cars are made in Europe anyway.

My interpretation of the rust issue is....... All cars rust!

A lot of it is are how cars have been engineered does the car drain water away from contact with metal.... Does the car pool water in areas..... What guage are the panels..... How has it been cared by its owners...... And also a bit of luck

My 08 Auris is still looking good with 190k on the clock (145k mine) - My 05 Mx5 died of rust had it 18 months and I only did 500 miles in it....... Looked good on viewing had had welding done for Mot but just not enough welding to save it

Update on brothers Yaris

He's going to roll the dice with a garage he knows in Nottingham..... They replaced the front subframe 6 months ago for £500...... I've suggested to brother budget for double that for the rear.... Fingers crossed!

I had the opportunity last week to look at the underside of the 2008 Yaris that came from the UK originally and it was shockingly bad with rust, so bad that you would never get to the end of it and my 2004 Yaris we put up on the lift to check that and it is very sound with minimal rust. Salt is a big factor but i see a lot Toyota Auris of 08/09 years with axle failure and im told the the axle ends are open so they rust from moisture in them . I know of 2 auris that have had axles changes from that era
