P0136 O2 Lambda Sensor (Bank 1 Sensor 2) Engine Fault Light

The engine light on my Auris 1.3 manual has come on.

Using a bluetooth OBDII device it's showing the following error:

P0136 - Powertrain

O2 Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 2)

Would this be the sensor on the engine, or the one closer to the exhaust/chassis?

Has anyone replaced their one before, and could recommend a part number for me?

Thanks

Have you tried clearing the fault codes, and do they both re-occur?

Yes, I cleared the codes but they come back after a 20 minute drive on the A roads or dual carriageway

Usually the heater parts on the sensor is the failure point. Just get a genuine Denso O2 sensor from local store and it is not terrible expensive as dealerships sell. They are identical as dealership parts. Just like Denso sparkplugs.

Cheers.

Are both sensors identical? I've seen a denso one on gsf parts

I would inspect the wiring for damage first. The sensor itself is only part of the circuit and not guaranteed to solve the problem without proving the wiring good first.

Sensor 2 will be the one after the catalytic converter, I expect.

Do check wiring first. O2 sensors can be cleaned and tested, see you tube.

The resistance of the o2 sensor can vary between makes. I once replaced a pattern o2 sensor and had to swap it back with original, due to resistance difference.

Personally would rather buy used original rather than pattern if it is faulty.

Denso bought from reputable seller will be as good as oem.
Used sensors might not be ideal as you don’t know how they are internally and what would be, if possible to return for refund if faulty it might worth the try.

Thank you all.

I'm gonna go with one of the following but they seem to be different sizes:

I guess the wires are different lengths for the two sensors, pre and post cat.

Do measure and compare  the resistance of the heating element, if your original is not blown.

Im not a fan of firing the parts cannon at a fault code, especially if the part is not cheap.

I agree. Shotgun parts repair is bad. I recommend to monitor the O2 sensors live reading after the car is fully warm.

The pre catalytic converter should be periodically up and down, the post cat should be flat and read certain voltage range. You can use Torque App, Carista, etc. with Veepeak OBD2 scanner.

Veepeak OBD2

Does it have to be this one?

I've got a standard bluetooh one and already have torque on my phone.

The reason why I wanna get the part is because I've had the engine light on for about a year now, and after resetting it a couple of weeks ago my stop start started working again, which I presume doesn't work whenever the engine light is on.

I'm going to the garage tomorrow to get an oil and filter change, so I wanted to kill two birds with one stone

it's the cheapest one with fully compatible and capable ELM327. More expensive brands do not give additional benefit and often worse.  https://priusapp.com/obd.html

Damn. This is the one I got given 😂:

Should I get the standard one HERE or the more expensive one HERE

Yeah, that fake ELM327 still can monitor O2 readings. Only for advanced readings like hybrid Battery control, ADAS, and Cxxxx codes, the fake ELM327 cannot pull out. Also, the reading for temperature and voltage can be funky in non fully capable ELM327

Show the graph instead of the instant value.  Check from the manual pdf (prius 2010 manual pdf search in Google) and see if the range of O2 sensors is right. I have the cheapest Veepeak.

Do you need both graphs, or just for Bank 1 Sensor 2?

Btw the car is a Prius, and I have the owner's manual downloaded already

Auris1 and 2 are identical in emission system as Prius 2009-2015. You just need to go to the Emission or Exhaust System chapter and check how to test O2 sensors. For your case, especially, Sensor 2 post catalytic converter.

Will it matter that my car is not a hybrid?

O2 sensor reading is a kind of generic for Toyota or any cars. Especially with Denso O2 sensor OEM parts
