Toyota Yaris Hybrid - Not Ready to Drive

Hello guys,

My car was delivered today by a gentleman from Chinch. It's a Toyota Yaris (KP72CZF), and I love it—planning to keep it for sure! However, I’m experiencing an issue with it. When I try to start it, I get a “not ready to drive” error message.

To troubleshoot, I replaced the Battery with a brand-new Yuasa HSB202 Silver 12V Car Battery (5-year guarantee) since the original Battery was dead. I suspect the dead battery may have triggered a fault code, and I might need a scanner to clear it.

I also reached out to Toyota, and they advised keeping my foot on the brake when starting, but the error message still appears.

If anyone has experienced something similar or has advice on how to resolve this, I’d really appreciate it!

Chat GPS is suggeting the following:

To clear the "Not Ready to Drive" error on a 2022 Toyota Yaris Hybrid, follow these steps:

  1. Ensure Proper Starting Procedure:

    • Make sure you are following the correct starting procedure. In Toyota hybrids, you usually need to press the brake pedal firmly and press the start button. Hold the brake down until you see "Ready" on the dashboard.
  2. Battery Check:

    • Since you replaced the 12V battery, ensure it's correctly connected, and all terminals are tight. Even a small voltage drop or loose connection can cause errors in hybrid systems.
  3. System Reset:

    • After replacing the 12V battery, the car's computer may need a reset. You can try disconnecting the 12V battery again, wait about 10-15 minutes, then reconnect it. This can sometimes reset the hybrid system.
  4. Fault Code Scan:

    • A fault code may be stored in the system if the old battery was fully dead. Use an OBD-II scanner compatible with hybrids to check for stored fault codes and clear them. Some auto parts stores will do this for free, or you could purchase a scanner for hybrid vehicles.
  5. Brake Pedal Calibration:

    • Make sure the brake pedal is fully pressed when starting. Some hybrids require a specific amount of pressure on the brake pedal before they recognize the "Ready" state. Try pressing firmly and holding for a few seconds before starting.
  6. Contact a Toyota Technician:

    • If the error persists, there may be an issue requiring dealer-level diagnostics. Since it’s a newer model, Toyota should support troubleshooting, especially since this issue appeared after battery replacement.

Kind regards,
Andrew

Thought it wasn't in P until I ran the video. Try moving the gear selector through all the positions to see if there is a sticky switch?

How did Chinch get the car off the loader?

Sorry, but I’m not seeing anything wrong in the second video.

Can you not just drive away once started ?

How did Chinch get the car off the loader? They drove the car to my house. The gears work fine no issues what so ever.

Are you pushing the brake pedal BEFORE pushing the start button/turning the key ?

If it helps, I got the steering wheel warning signal when I parked with the front wheels not straight.  Can't remember if it came on as I parked or when I started the car up again.

I did have it in mind that I hadn't parked straight and that the front wheels were twisted so decided that was the problem and sure enough, coming out of the parking space everything was fine.

Not had a problem since.

I think you're getting that because you're either turning the key before pressing the brake pedal, or you're turning the key to position 2 (On), pausing, then turning to position 3 (Start).

If you hold down the brake and then turn the key straight to position 3 it should go straight into Ready mode, instead of just turning On first.

My Mk4 is a push button start, but I had a twist-key one as a courtesy car and the mental disconnect of trying to start it with the key instead of the push button really messed with my head when I first tried to start it

The problem was I'm conditioned, by years of driving normal cars, to twist the key to Position 2, pause so the fuel pump can pressurize, then twist it to Position 3 and hold it until the engine fires - Obviously none of that is needed with the hybrid, but I was doing that unconsciously which was getting it stuck in the Not Ready to Drive but On mode. I had to consciously force myself to hold the brake and twist it straight to Position 3 and immediately let go.

It's one of the reasons I've come round to the push button start for the hybrids - I'd take a proper twist key over push button any day of the week for a normal car, but for EVs and Hybrids the push button start makes more sense because of weirdness like this!

That’s not a fault message but simply the car communication with the driver.

Happens when you are inside the car, the car is set in acc mode for example when you turn the key or push button once and no foot on the brake, or foot bern placed too gently. After you had a voltage drop in your 12v Battery for example can also happen, but most of the time it’s just the car communicate with you. When you step properly on the brake and the car is set in ready mode no more messages like that will appear. Don’t worry about it. See owners manual for further information.
This is also happening on non hybrids new Toyota cars, like Aygo x for example. 👍

It's just advising you that car is not able to drive as it isn't yet in Ready mode. As soon as Ready mode becomes active the warning disappears.

I will try this in the morning "
